Merrillee Whren to Speak November 10, 2011

Merrillee Whren is an award-winning author who writes for Harlequin Love Inspired. She is the winner of the 2003 Golden Heart Award for best inspirational romance manuscript presented by Romance Writers of America. She has also been the recipient of the RT Reviewers' Choice Award and the Maggie Award. She is married to her own personal hero, her husband of thirty plus years, and has two grown daughters. She has lived in Atlanta, Boston, Dallas and Chicago but now makes her home on one of God's most beautiful creations, an island off the east coast of Florida. When she's not writing or working for her husband's recruiting firm, she spends her free time playing tennis or walking the beach, where she does the plotting of her novels.

Critiques and Books

Our group loves critique! So we've decided that, for the time being, we're going to concentrate on that aspect with the occasional speaker. But since education is an important part of our craft, I'd like to share some of my favorite writing books with you.

The first book I read when I started my writing journey was Self-Editing for Fiction Writers: How to edit yourself into print by Renni Browne and Dave King.

Both authors are professional editors; Renni Browne began The Editorial Department, a national book-editing company, in 1980 after working for various mainstream publishers including William Morrow. Dave King works as an independent editor at www.davekingedits.com and also serves as a contributing editor for Writer's Digest.

This book is a good overall guide to fiction writing with chapters on: Show and Tell, Characterization and Exposition, Point of View, Proportion (bogged down in details), Dialogue Mechanics, See How It Sounds, Interior Monologue (voices in one's head), Easy Beats, Breaking Up is Easy to Do, Once is Usually Enough, Sophistication (polished and professional), and Voice.

Each chapter has examples of typical mistakes, followed by the same passage written a better way - I could clearly see my writing in many of the first examples and easily mimic the second. A checklist at the end of the chapters serves as a summary of important points and exercises provide an opportunity to apply the lessons.

There are books on these specific topics that will go into further depth, but this is a good introduction to all the elements of fiction writing.

Chris Berman to Speak Thursday, August 11

Chris Berman calls himself an accidental author. He wrote his first novel, The Hive, while recovering from a biking accident. He has since written Red Moon and Star Pirates, available at bookstores and online. His fourth book, Das Bell, is awaiting publication.

As a boy, Chris was influenced by science fiction authors such as Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke and John Campbell. A neighbor and amateur astronomer further fueled his passion for science and astrodynamics, and he has been an avid follower of both the US and Russian space programs.

Chris conducted a workshop at this year's UNF Writer's Conference and will be teaching a course there this fall. He currently lives in St. Augustine with his wife and daughters.

Rik Feeney to Speak August 4, 2011

Rik Feeney adapted his love of reading, writing, and gymnastics to become a published author of more than 60 books, reports, and CD's on the sport and business of gymnastics as well as a book coach, book cover designer, and promotional expert for aspiring authors.

Rik has been traditionally published by McGraw-Hill for his book "Gymnastics: A Guide for Parents and Athletes", but then opted to start his own publishing company in 1994 called Richardson Publishing, which uses Traditional, Print-On-Demand, and Digital publishing technologies.

Rik received a Bachelor of Arts in Writing and Literature from Vermont College of Norwich University in 2003. He is currently a columnist for AllExperts.com answering questions in two categories: Publishing/Self Publishing, and the sport of Gymnastics.

He currently works with authors and self-publishers as a book coach, marketing coach, and publishing consultant providing insight and information to help new writers leap beyond the mundane but financially treacherous concerns of publishing.

Rik is also the Orlando - Florida Writer's Association Group Leader and Platinum Sponsor for the FWA State Writer's Conference.

Rik Feeney has done several talks at writer's conferences and seminars throughout the Southeast and is finishing three new books, Writing Books for Fun, Fame & Fortune, Publishing for Penny-Pinchers, and Book Marketing Success for Authors on a Budget.

Hitting the Target

Our group is really growing. Last night we had seven members attend with five bringing pieces for critique. From Cody's futuristic Sam Spade-type novel to Top's YA fantasy and Richard's 5 Strangers screenplay, it all added up to great writing and lots of fun around the critique table. How energizing to have so many writing and sharing - keep up the good work, y'all.

Janelle has polished off a few changes her editor suggested, and Linda has gotten a book contract! The reason we sweat and bleed over these manuscripts is for that joyful day when a publisher says, "Yes, I like what you wrote, AND I want to buy it." Congratulations to both of you on your upcoming books!

Tracy is working professionally as a ghost writer for a risk management consultant, and Lynn is busily writing content for her caregiving blog that is targeted to launch in the fall.

We start each meeting by sharing successes and end with setting goals. This provides inspiration and accountability to keep us focused on our aims and achievements. If you need a nudge in your writing life, we invite you to join us. We meet every Thursday night from 6:45 to 8:45 at the Wesconnett Library on 103rd Street. The $1.00 per week dues can be paid weekly or bi-annually in January and July.

Ten Mistakes Authors Make

During Gary's visit on June 16, he shared experiences in his career as an agent, book coach and reviewer. From this I gleaned ten pitfalls for us to avoid.

1. The 'been there, done that' novice: This has to do with attitude, specifically a know-it-all attitude. Usually found in first-time authors who, even though they only possess a much-rejected manuscript, shun the advice of those who have actually travelled the road to publication. Overcome this attitude by finding an agent or a book coach who can take you through the process.

2. That's how I roll: This is the author who won't take constructive criticism from a teacher, mentor, critique partner or agent. The author wants to preserve the integrity of her words, but every suggestion deserves review and consideration of its merits.

3. #$@**!: In reviewing books, Gary has found that the use of foul language and potty humor is rampant, but is only necessary on very rare occasions. He states that good writing stands on its own.

4. The princess syndrome: This author calls daily or sends e-mails with subject lines of "second notice." Gary states this only irritates editors, reviewers and publishers. A good author knows how long the process takes and doesn't try to rush it. If no response is received after the standard time frame, a gentle request for status is certainly acceptable.

5. Putting the cart before the horse: Gary relates the marketing genius of one wannabe author. His plan was to obtain a table at a national convention and sit there. No book (because it wasn't yet written), no marketing materials to build hype for the book, just a table and a would-be author. How lame.

6. Dissing your readers: Next in line is the author who had a published book, but didn't bring any copies for his readers to buy and get autographed. His plan was to send them to his Website to make the purchase. On the flip side, Gary praises the innovation of the author who brought marketing material for his upcoming book. When people picked up the free literature he would offer, "Let me autograph that for you." That's building rapport and respecting your readers.

7. Network Profiling: Gary tells the story of an author who refused to network with anyone wearing a wedding band on the basis that they wouldn't be interested in her book on dating. How short sighted! Misery loves company, so that married person would surely want to give the book to a single friend, sister, cousin or co-worker.

8. Please don't read my book: As a professional book reviewer, Gary expressed surprise at how often authors turn down his offer to review their book. Do they not want to reach the thousands of readers from a Midwest Book Review?

9. Skipping to the 'big show': Wouldn't you prefer to find out that you constantly swivel or have some other irritating nervous habit before you've been seen by millions on national television? Gary helps his clients get booked on local radio and TV shows. This allows him to review their performance and help them improve before they make their debut on Fox and Friends.

10. Ignoring opportunity's knock: After doing the local shows and polishing your performance, don't do like one of Gary's clients and blow off your big break because you don't like the topic. Wow 'em with your professionalism and soon you'll have the pick of shows and subjects.

Gary S. Roen, syndicated book reviewer/writer, publishing consultant, author and agent, has been writing his appraisals of books for 30 years. His reviews have appeared in over hundreds of daily, weekly newspapers, and other periodicals that currently include http://www.westorlandonews.com/, Midwest Book Review, St. Cloud In The News, five editions of magazines from Gage Publishing and Arrhythmic Souls. Kia Ricchi to Speak Thursday, April 28

Kia Ricchi (aka The Contractress) is a Florida-licensed building contractor. Since earning her licensure in 1998, Kia has completed numerous residential and commercial projects including several for the State of Florida.

Kia Ricchi has written articles for national publications such as Fine Homebuilding, Remodeling, and Image.

She is also a frequent guest on NPR and other nationally syndicated radio show.

Speakers Provide Valuable Information

On March 31, Rebekah Hunter Scott and Michael Ray King shared their perspectives on query letters.

Rebekah, author of Motherhood is Easy, provided tips for writing successful query letters and explained the synergy of the publishing industry. From her blog came a book, that made editors want her magazine articles, those marketed her book and blog, and that launched the writing of a second book...you see the possibilities.

"Know your goals and then research publishers to find a good fit for those goals," advises publisher Michael Ray King of ClearView Press, Inc. When you find the right publisher, be sure to follow submission guidelines to the letter. Not doing so almost certainly guarantees your submission a home in the publisher's circular file. He expressed surprise at how few authors abide by this simple caveat. Mike has just three submission guidelines: write one paragraph each about yourself, your project, and your niche market and marketing plan. He reminded us that to be successful, writing is 10 percent, but marketing is 90 percent. In that vein, he suggested that all writers have a 30-second synopsis of their project memorized for conferences and chance meetings.

We don't want people to steal our work, but we must be equally vigilant not to steal the work of others. On April 7, Lucille Ponte, professor of law at Florida Coastal School of Law, made a PowerPoint presentation on the ins and outs of copyright law. Downloading video and music from the internet or too closely mirroring a scene from a book or movie could be intentional or unintentional copyright infringement, she warned. To know what is and isn't allowed she directed us to the federal government's web site, or if you prefer video tutorials, visit Cornell University.

To protect our own rights, she recommends consulting an attorney certified in intellectual property before signing any contracts for your work. Attorneys can be found through the Florida Bar.

The ABCs of Copyright - April 7, 2011

Lucille Ponte, Professor of Law, Florida Coastal School of Law, will present an educational talk on the basics of copyright. She will discuss what types of works are subject to copyright, the main statutory rights of copyright holders, the key aspects of copyright infringement and the main infringement defenses. Resources on copyright and the importance of seeking appropriate legal counsel will also be addressed.

Professor Ponte teaches and writes about intellectual property, contracts, and cyberlaw at Florida Coastal School of Law. A member of the MA bar, she previously served as in-house counsel for government agencies and technology companies in Massachusetts and Washington, D.C., negotiating complex commercial agreements and handling a broad range of internal legal matters, including products liability and employment issues. She has authored two books and numerous legal and travel publications, including articles in the The Boston Globe, Hemispheres, Richmond Times-Dispatch, Roanoke Times, Alternatives, and LegalZoom.

Under her pen name, Bridges DelPonte, she is a member of the Florida Writers Association and Sisters in Crime, Inc. and has written one mystery, Deadly Sacrifices, and is currently working on an undersea fantasy novel, The Last Emissary. Keeping Focused

Wow, February is nearly over - are you working on your writing goals? I constantly have to remind myself to stay focused. Weekly attendance at
a writing group gives me the motivation to do that.

Janelle is the most disciplined person I know. Each week she establishes a goal and consistently meets it or comes darn close. She has finished her character development and has 20,000 words written for her second novel.

Greg, after much urging from the group and other friends, has launched his blog. Time Worth Taking provides encouragement and inspiration and is another example of accomplishing goals.

Tandeace is using Facebook and Twitter to get her words out. I know she's faithful - I see her on Facebook at least once everyday. Visit her Website at Tandeace Hairston Writes.

Deadlines are a sure fire way to bring focus (or at least stress) to a project. Tracy has been working under that particular gun with two assignments. First, a marketing project - capturing a client's attention in a few well chosen words. Second, a technical paper on dream analysis.

As I work to bring order to my diverse writing interests, seeing others succeed is just the spark I need to keep me on target.

Thursday, December 16, was the last meeting for 2010. We've had some great success stories this fall. Janelle's book is being fast-tracked for publication in the fall of 2011. Lynn won editor's choice in a recent Faithwriter's challenge. And, Joy continues to discover revelations on her journey. Each member contributes valuable insights and encouragement through critiques and the sharing of experiences and resources.

As we close the book on 2010 and begin writing the first chapter of 2011, we hope to grow and expand our circle of friends. Our next meeting will be on Thursday, January 6. If your New Year's resolution is to focus on your writing, drop in. We're a casual critique group and welcome visitors.

Good Times, Great Writing

We had some great meetings in August. Ellen Gilbert brought her patriotic poetry and told us the story of how a friend passed it along to Cliff Stearns who read it into the Congressional Record. Shirley Knight shared part of her book, A Journey Through Fire, about her husband's struggle with Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Our members also shared their projects, goals and successes. Christine Ramey attended the Faithwriter's Conference and we anticipate her return with lots of tips and encouragement. Greg Gaines delighted us with the audio component for his inspirational Web site. The creativity of Kristen Blyar's poetry gets our juices flowing each week and has inspired poetry in other members. We continue to learn local history and civics lessons from the series by Lynn Rix who, by the way, earned second place in the Faithwriter's Weekly Challenge for her essay on "smell". Tina Givens evoked memories of "packers" versus "payers" in her kindergarten memoir. We eagerly await the next chapter of Tom Jones' thriller and Tracy Redman shared her goal of obtaining her Master's degree in mental health.

If you have a piece that needs a fresh set of eyes, or need some motivation to start writing again, drop by. We meet every Thursday night from 6:45 to 8:45 to enjoy a relaxed, laughter-filled time of critique, encouragement and fellowship.

Clark Surprised Us with a Visit

Tonight was supposed to be a night of critiques instead; we received a surprised visit from Sherrie Clark Article Manager of http://www.jaxchristian.com/. She shared with us that her manager was looking for new writers. This has never happened before! Someone came looking for writers. After all we are a writing group.

She shared that they we needing articles of all kinds. Any subject basically. It is wonderful when we receive visits like this. This goes to show what word of mouth can do for you as a writer! Her manager heard about us from his manager. Therefore, his manager went to Sherrie and asked her to visit us. Wow! This is the power of marketing.

Sherrie shared with us how that they had received 600 face book fans just in the first day they opened. It was a miracle for this new company that they have started off so powerful. That of course, is the power of God.

She told us not to worry about how many articles to send that she would find a way to use them. Sherrie said that a good word count would be anywhere from 300-1000 words for an article. They do not pay at the moment but they are hoping to in the near future. They have already received an overwhelming hit on their site as to who is reading what. That is the power of the media and internet.

DiGenti Shares His Ideas On Character Development

Vic is the NE Florida Regional Director for the Florida Writer’s Association, http://www.floridawriters.net/. He’s the author of the “Windrusher” adventure/fantasy trilogy of award-winning novels, and also teaches a writing workshop at the University of North Florida. Vic talked about character development in fiction and writing effective dialogue. He began by saying, “One of the things that makes a novel memorable is strong and realistic characters.” He characterized it by stating “…writers, in effect, are playing God because they’re creating people, even though they’re storybook people.” Storybook people aren’t like real people, they’re bigger than life in many ways. Real people lead boring lives, but storybook people must stand out and hook a reader’s interest.

The writer can begin the process of creating storybook people by building a history for them. This can include details of the character’s background, physical characteristics, education, occupation and more. By doing this the writer is able to understand a character’s actions and motivations, even if much of this biographical information doesn’t appear in the story.
Sometimes, you can develop your character from someone you know. Use some of their traits, and build around them, letting the character’s grow in your imagination like a scientist grows cultures in a petri dish. As the character grows, Vic said, “…you’ll be surprised how they take on a life of their own.”

The second part of his presentation focus on how to write effective dialogue. Dialogue is an essential part of a good story, but writing good dialogue takes work and practice. Many people think writing dialogue is easy since people have been talking all their lives, but story dialogue isn’t like real life conversation which tends to be filled with pauses, and “uhs,” “you knows,” and boring interaction that wouldn’t work in a story where every line should move the story forward.

Building conflict into dialogue adds interest to the story and the characters. Oblique dialogue is another way to add tension to a conversation. This occurs when a speaker doesn’t answer a question or changes subjects abruptly. Vic also suggested that writer should read their work aloud or record it into a tape player and listen to it. Surprisingly, clunky and confusing language is much more apparent when listening to it rather than reading it to yourself.

Attributions in dialogue refers to the “he said,” “she said” part of the sentence which tells the reader who is speaking. Too many beginning writers believe the reader will get bored reading this over and over and augment them with adverbs like, “he said dramatically,” or uses words like, “she intoned,” or “he grumbled.” Resist the urge to make these changes as they mark the author as a beginner. The reader accepts the “he said,” “she said” attributions and barely notices them. And not every line of dialogue needs attribution after the speakers have been identified.
Vic also talked about “beats,” which are the bits of stage business a character might do while they’re talking. For example, the author might have the character tugging at an earlobe or pushing a lock of hair from her forehead. These are beats, and they help the reader visualize the scene. But be careful not to overdo the beats as they can slow down the flow of the scene.

Hadden Shares His Business Perspective on Writing

Richard began working as a contract trainer for companies that had leadership training programs. He had begun speaking to other companies about these ideas. He got to travel a lot because of that opportunity. One day while landing in Orlando airport, and waiting in the airport that day he received a phone call from his old friend Bill. Bill talked to him for a while explaining that he wanted to see him and share his ideas for writing a book. His friend, Bill had been working on the book for a while. They later met up and shared their ideas and begun to develop the book until it was completed.

It was in 1995, that Bill called Richard and asked to meet him in Orlando. While they met, he shared with Richard his ideas for the book Contented Cows Give Better Milk. He wanted to reach the leadership of these businesses. By doing this, they could present it to the leaders and the leaders would then pass the message along to the employee's. While Richard was there in Orlando and talking with Bill, he had asked him to help him write his book as he had been struggling with the ideas of the book. So, Richard agree. Now, back in 1995 the only way they could view each other's work was through email. Google docs was not around at that time.

Luckily for them, they later discovered Google docs. Google docs allowed them to be looking at each other's work at the very same time. They could make their changes and save it to pass it back and forth. For a long time that was how they worked together as a team. Often times, they would call on another and share their ideas with each other to confirm each other's ideas. Once the book was finished it was time for them to decide how they would publish it. This became the hard part of publishing a book. Deciding who would do that. After much consideration, they decided to publish it themselves.

They hired a consultant that was a friend of a friend of Bill's. This really helped them with doing self publishing. They had no idea how to do any of the technical part of publishing. So, their consultant helped to accomplish this. The first book that was self-published came out in December 1997. This book was called Contented Cows Give Better Milk. They had several designs to choose from for this book. Needless to say, it was the cover that caused the book to sell.

Later they began to learn the marketing side of being a self-published book. They talked with several radio stations to help them with their search. As they began, that they printed about five hundered cards and sent them to those radio stations and got eighty five responses back. They were amazed by the amount of responses they got back. Within one of those responses they got an offer to speak with Clark Howard. Clark Howard was not the one that Richard spoke with, but had someone else that took his place that night. It was around Christmas time that this interview was to take place and all of the employees had gone home early. So, he got the replacement speaker. This was in 1997 in Atlant.

Nevertheless, Richard took the spot and took the call from his office. He began speaking with the young lady that did the interview. He answered the questions as best as he could and before he knew the phone lines began to ring. He wondered who was calling him on Christmas Eve. He didn't realize that it was peple responding from the interview.

His wife had set up a website for him that allowed people to purchase the book online. When he was done with the show and had gone home he had twenty one orders waiting. He was in disbelief.

They began to market the book after that speaking engagement. Richard was able to gain speaking engagements including CNN and many others. Richard loves to speak in front of people as that is his primary job. Contented Cows has given him the opportunity to share his business plans with many companies that are struggling in their leadership skills.

Henderson's Gives Tips on Screen Writing

Ken and Lesa Henderson came tonight to talk to us about screen writing. Lesa began writing at the early age of ten. She knew from that moment she wanted to write somehow and in some way. Lesa had the dream of one day writing a novel. She later met her husband Ken, got married and got involved in ministry with him. Meanwhile, she pursued her writing and was published in national magazines such as Woman's World, Ladies Home Journal, Charisma Magazine and many others. It was not until later in life she felt God calling her to screen writing.

They began working together through the ministry of their church and through the work of writing. They seemed to be every where together and from that learned how to complete each other's sentences when speaking. For several years, they served on the board of MOVIEGUIDE and The Christian Film and Television Commission with Dr Ted Beahr in Hollywood.
They have had the pleasure of meeting many wonderful people through their work.

Ken and Lesa shared with us the tips to writing a well written screen manuscript.

They urged us to always have a beginning, a strong middle, and a great ending. These were very valuable points as it related to writing. It is valuable because many of the moviews you watch are formed in this way. Ken shared how as they were learning to construct a screenplay they would go to the movies together with a stopwatch to see where the Plot points in it were. They could sit down and watch a movie and have it timed by when the beginning was noted, the middle of the story arrived, and when the closing would come. These were all very important when writing for a screen play of any kind.

Today, they have their own production company http://www.possibilityproductions.net/ and have produced a film 201 Belmont, and written two others ABOVE YOUR DREAMS AND FIRE OUT OF GEORGIA. The latter two are expected to begin filming in 2010.

It was interesting listening to the two of them share, as one would finish what the other was trying to say. They told us it was because of all the time they've spent together ministering and working. I guess that would be tru with anyone you work with as closely as they have to work together!

They also talked about the importance of sending a clear message. They want the message to be clear that they are writing for the Lord! They want those who are lost to receive the message loud and clear.

Quatrano Defines a "Professional Writer!"

Nancy Quatrano has a very warm and engagin presence. On Thursday's meeting, she immediately engaged the group by asking us to define the term "Professional Writer." The members in attendance all agreed that to us it meant being able to make a living from our writing. Nancy challenged us to broaden our definitions to "Anyone seriously interested in writing for publication is a professional writer!" With her definition as the backdrop to the meeting she explained "Etiquette for the Professional Writer."

Nancy provided handouts to assist us in following along as she expounded on the key components of etiquette.

Number one component is to be prepared. Be prepared to meet people and put forth your image as a professional writer. Know what you are going to say, be ready to answer questions and engage in conversations. Know your abilities. What do you want to do? What can you do? You need to be ready by reviewing these ideas and coming up wit the answers. Also important is to never pretend you know more than you really do. Don't have your own agenda. Be open to listening and learning something new. Which leads us to component number 2 Learn, Listen, Rewrite.

Listening is a great way to gather information. People talk about what they are passionate about. You learn about people by what they talk about. Also, listen to strangers talking. This is a great tool to help learn to write dialogue. It helps you pick up on dialect and regional nuances. You will be amazed how much you can learn simpy by listening. Keep notes in a 3 X 5 card file or a "dialog" folder in your desk so you can refer to them when you are writing an article or chapter and need that local "flavor."

Component number three Write to Submit. You will never get paid to be a writer if you never submit your work. "Be encouraged to do little things." Write articles and short stories, they are fast and easy ways to get published. You need to commit time to your writing and give yourself deadlines to get things done. "A Professional Writer submits their work." Submit to magazines, contest anything that will get you read and may be seen by editors. Join writing groups, go to conferences, submit to reputable contests. These will help you hone your own writing skills and shape your image as a professional writer. "Writers blossom with other writers." Becoming known will help you get noticed by Agents and Editors.

This is the Fourt component. To finally make it to the world of agents and publishing. Nancy reminds us, "God gives us our passions, our job is to use them." If we just use our passions, the results will be there.

God blessed Nancy with a voice and a gift to write songs. She was singing with the adult Wesminister Choir at Princeton NJ when she was nine years old, and professionally by the age of 13. By seventeen, she was making a comfortable living at singing. She planned to use her earning to go to nursing school, but soon decided there was too much life to be lived. After one year, she left nursing school. Her singing and songwriting passion turned out to be the stepping stone to her writing career. She sold her first commercial work in 1999 to Pisces Press in Virginia Beach, Virginia, which also resulted in two ghostwriting assignments and has published non-fiction, romance and mystery short stories every year since.

Nancy's final words; "Everyone is a work in progress, just like our writing. Don't give up our dreams. Writers who don't write are unhappy."

Douce Writes About His Dreams

Robert Douce of St. John’s Florida visited with First Coast Christian Writers to discuss his novel, Cosmic Light and his inspiration dreams about the book. He shared with us how God inspired him to write through six different dreams. All six of the dreams were in sequential order. He knew that this was something that God had called him to do. This is how Douce and his co-author Fernando Amandi wrote Cosmic Light!

Douce is a Customized and Technical Writer for academic and career portfolios; you can view his book at http://www.cosmiclightthebook.com/ . He began to tell us why he wrote the book and turned to the book of Matthew and read about Jesus walking on the water. He was looking for strength and faith and focused on Peter to provide his inspiration. Douce stated he read that scripture thirty nights in row! On the thirty-first night a light bulb went off in his head! He understood that if God does the asking, he could not fail. Douce battled cancer in 2003, and wanted to find that same strength, faith and courage from Peter. He prayed for God during his 30 days of radiation treatments to ask him to be of service and serve for a purpose. It wasn’t until 2005, he received his first dream and the sixth and final dream came in 2008. He would awake after these dreams every morning at 2:30 AM. He felt compelled to write these spiritual intense dreams of hope for the future of mankind that he was given.

These dreams were all in sequel order and he knew this was unusual and felt the need to write about these dreams. He began immediately writing what he had dreamed. He went through two co-authors before he found Fernando Amandi who is also a cancer survivor and a neighbor.
They define their book as a “Christian Fiction” as it is an uplifting story. Their sequel may be A New Age Begins On Earth and involves the world. He then read a few excerpts from his Cosmic Light book! He began to share about the dreams he had in detail. His dreams involved advanced technologies in “energy and the elimination of fossil fuels.” “ He never saw technical names in his dreams, but the authors researched and found all the advanced technologies were in progress in scientific labs all over the world. The dreams include solutions for: “Energy, education, medical, crime, capital punishment to name a few. In the near future, criminals fleeing from the law in vehicles will be over with “A flip of the switch!” Douce stated. We will use space elevators and no need for gas and oil. These are only a fraction of the visions in the dreams.

The speaker’s 3 points in his speech were: Inspiration, Message and Outreach. “The Dreams served as his Inspiration to write, The Message is what God gave him in content to help others to find hope and a better world, and finally, Outreach is what each writer needs to accomplish after writing a book!” He went on to explain how he was the messenger. Douce shared that it is important for writers to have a marketing plan for their book. This is the Outreach. He is writing letters and speaking about his book. Letters have been sent to Oprah, Vatican, talk shows, etc. about solutions in the book that deal with crime to children in kidnapping, sexual predators, abuse. He has written to many other places in hopes to get their message out and to help market their book.

“Outreach is getting your message out and a need for a marketing plan!” He went on to discuss. His publisher’s website is: http://www.onlinebinding.com/ for the book, Cosmic Light. They interviewed around 10 publishers and this one was last on their list to check out. They loved how they did the large print, which they wanted to make it easier for the reader to read. They have been asked to print their book in Spanish and have over 35 foreign countries request on their website.

Their book has only been out on the market less than seven weeks. The publisher has advertised on facebook last week and they received over one hundred and eighty hits from the ad. This is part of their marketing plan and outreach goal.

The profits they make will go to cancer research, specific cancer patients, education and to churches they belong to. We enjoyed the inspirational story that Douce shared with First Coast Christian Writers. We hope that his book Cosmic Light continues to have much success.

Hanks Gives 10 Points of Good Writing Skills

“

When you’ve said what you want to say – stop!” explained Jerry Hanks as he conveyed to FCCW members the last of 10 tips for writing well. He and his wife, Bobbi de Cordova-Hanks, did just that on November 5 as they shared practical advice and endearing anecdotes to help writers improve their skills. With an astounding 80 years of professional writing and editing experience between them, Jerry and Bobbi know what it takes to write well.

Jerry, who holds a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University, is a writer, editor and public relations specialist with extensive newspaper experience. He is co-founder of the local PR and writing firm, Hanks-Livingston, Inc.
Bobbi, who spent 25 years as a professional musician, has served as editor of number of trade publications in addition to serving as news bureau manager at what was formerly Florida Community College at Jacksonville.

Together they co-authored the book, Tears of Joy, which tells the story of their life together as a cancer survivor (Bobbi) and a cancer caregiver (Jerry).
In a similar “tag team” approach, the couple collaborated to impart valuable wisdom to both seasoned and emerging writers in the group. Some of the tips included:

“Know your readers. Know who your writing is intended to reach.” Bobbi explained this fundamental principle to the group while Jerry encouraged them to get a mental picture of their audience so as to write in a way that is personal and appealing.

“Know what you’re writing about and what you want to say.” Sharing a story from his college years, Jerry illustrated how important it is to know your subject matter and not to overlook obvious details and basic questions. In the example, the class was given a writing prompt regarding a church steeple collapse. Every student, while thoroughly covering the details of the accident, neglected to mention the height of the steeple!

“Write it the way you would say it.” Bobbi discussed how she translates complicated medical terminology into everyday language as editor of a trade publication for the Intercultural Cancer Council at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. She admonished the group to make their writing interesting and real.

“If you’re having trouble getting started, try starting with a question.” A useful pointer, Jerry described how he gets a piece moving when the words won’t come. Asking “What does the typical reader want to know?” is a great way to get the ink flowing.

“Edit. Edit. Edit.” This advice is taken for granted by writers with potentially embarrassing results. Bobbi strongly encouraged writers to hire a professional editor to catch mistakes before they are in print. The value to the reputation of the writer and the quality of the piece far exceed the cost.

By the end of the presentation, each writer departed with easy-to-apply principles to elevate their craft and memorable stories to warm their hearts.

Chris Berman and His Book The Hive!

Chris Berman, a Science-Fiction novelist, joined First Coast Christian Writer's all the way from St. Augustine. The knowledge he brought to us was definitely inspiring. He taught us the difference between Hard Science-Fiction and Soft-Fiction Writing!

It was interesting to learn the reason he began writing; Chris took a simple ride one morning to rent a van that he was going to drive to Philadelphia for business from the Budget Rent-A-Car six miles from his home. On the way there, he was in a near-fatal bike accident as he was hit by a car.

He had several injuries that made him unable to sleep lying down for weeks. With nothing to do late into the night, he remembered his wife Laressa, had always encouraged him to write. However, with his work load, he never had the time. During his recovery, he had lots of time to write late at night as the pain would not let him sleep. Every night, he sat there working on his story, The Hive.

He spent many hours in research on astronomy for accuracy of the story. This never bothered Chris as it was his passion. He loved watching the stars and studying the science part of it. So, it filled his time as he sat up for weeks on end.

Chris began his discussion about the books he is currently working on at this point in his writing career! To get a publishing contract, he used the site http://www.preditorsandeditors.com/. He discover Xpress Yourself Publishing that offered to publish his book, The Hive. The Hive is complete and doing very well in major bookstores. He went on to explain that with using http://www.preditorsandeditors.com/ you will find agents and publishers are color coded by green, yellow, and red. The green means they are very good to deal with, the yellow means caution some aspects of their operation seem like scams, and red means total scam don't use!

He also told us about two others books he is in the process of writing. The first one is Red Moon, which is finished. He has sent those revisions to the ARC to be approved. Finally, he has begun working on one other book. This book he has only gotten about four or five chapter completed.

With his book The Hive, he has had the opportunity for book signings up as far as New Jersey, Maryland, South Carolina, Georgia, and of course in Florida! The Hive he continued to explain is more of a "classic earth vs. alien" style of a book. In other words he explained as "we didn't put dinner on for the aliens, we became their dinner."

He described "Hard Science-Fiction has "technology based information, the hardware so to speak." He went on to say the "One author that came to mind was Arthur C. Clarke as he wrote 2001 and 2010. He also wrote the Fountains of Paradise and many others." Those were just a few titles that he wrote, Chris classified those as Science-Fiction books!

He then gave a description of "Soft Science-Fiction" by giving an example of the book River World written by Phillip Jose Farmer. As well as he named several other books written by different author's on both topics. That is on Hard and Soft Science-Fiction books.

He began the discussion about his book The Hive, and talked about the scientific parts of his books; such as the technology of building different rockets, drawing for us an example of one and explaining how the rocket works.

He spoke very highly of the Orion Project and how it worked. This was demonstrated in the drawing. He discussed the different components of the rocket and what each is responsible for. Definitely a lot of research was noted in his discussion of his book The Hive!

He also mentioned how that a theme in his book was to impart there was higher power, and a "God" was responsible for our early discovery of the approaching Hive fleet. A definite struggle between Man's and Hive technology! He has a driven mind and concept in reaching his readers to understand the glorious power of God's great love! That our God given intelligence as well as as a forewarning would be responsible for victory, but ONLY if we acted as a united human family. We wish Chris all the best of luck with his book The Hive and the many others that will come to follow it!

FCCW Secretary & VP PR Positions Filled

Tonight was a discussion about the future of First Coast Christian Writers and were we would like it to go from here.

Tracy Redman, FCCW Treasurer, addresses FCCW participants.

Many talked about the possibilities of making us in connections with Toastmasters! The majority was in the vote and on the go with Toastmaster. Nevertheless, there were those whom did not like the idea of Toastmasters as it would change the group from what Dr. Lorraine intended for it to be.

Many commented on a job well done that Dr. Lorraine has brought to our group, and the many hours of labor and love she has brought forth to First Coast Christian Writers. This has been Dr. Lorraine’s baby. She had begun this group from the ground up. "The work I've done over the past two years has been very fulfilling, but now it's time to pass the torch to other leaders," says Lorraine.

Many things were talked about as the group discussed together the work that needed to be done. The first thing Dr. Lorraine brought up was the fact of needing to fill all the officer positions. There were several positions that needed to be filled and voted upon. Those positions were as follows: Vice President of Education, Vice President of Public Relations, Secretary, and Treasurer. It's too much of a load for one person to take on all these responsibilities. "The group needs strong leadership in order to be sustainable," says Lorraine.

We talked about Toastmasters and we discussed the different possibilities, but the decision was to not go in that direction at this time. We decided as a group, and acknowledged it would be too much of a culture change to the group. First Coast Christian Writers was built based on a foundation of Toastmasters principles and procedures, but we're not going to move forward to become an official Toastmasters chapter at this time.

Someone brought up was the possibility of having two meeting’s a month instead of meeting weekly. Someone brought up the idea of having a critique group one week and a speaker the next. Many other ideas were suggested. No times or dates as to when and if changes will be finalized will take place until after the new leadership team has a chance to discuss changes for 2010. The members who paid through December 2009 can rest assured that the weekly meetings will remain the same through the end of the year.

Ann Brinegar volunteered to work with the VP of Membership to match members as mentors/mentees for members who are interested in extra accountability to their writing goals outside the meetings. This supports our mission for holding each other accountable for reaching goals.

The point was brought back to the floor about needing to fill positions. As time was close to the end, votes were made.

Lynn Rix was nominated and unanimously voted in as Vice President of Public Relations. Lynn wants to learn the public relations side of the writing business.

Christine M. Ramey was nominated and unanimously voted in as Secretary. She is happy and honored to take it.

Tracy Redman, FCCW Treasurer, was nominated and unanimously voted in as new President for 2010. Tracy will shadow Lorraine Haataia through the end of the year, and will become the new president effective January 1, 2010.

Karen Godfrey is fairly new to her position as VP of Membership. She accepted this position a few weeks ago and is eager to serve FCCW visitors and members.

Buddy Putnam agreed to remain Sergeant at Arms. He has served faithfully in this position since the group began meeting in January 2008.

Bob Haataia has faithfully served as the club webmaster since fall of 2007. Before the group began meeting, Bob worked with Lorraine to build the club website, blog, and other marketing tools. Bob has agreed to remain the webmaster.

Although two positions still remain open, Vice President of Education and Treasurer, Dr. Lorraine Haataia was relieved and thankful that two officer positions were filled and she can now begin training new leaders and concentrating more on her own writing. Effective January 1, 2010, Lorraine will serve as the Immediate Past President, providing guidance for Tracy, and the new leadership team.

Everyone was pleased with the decisions that were made and the meeting was closed and bathed in prayer for the future of First Coast Christian Writers.

Koerner Shares The Belief Formula

Pete Koerner has a refreshing message on the power of prayer.

Pete reminds us that prayer is the oldest form of problem-solving and healing, despite the fact it has been rendered marginally effective through years of ignorance and misunderstanding. Pete recalls as a child in Tennessee how few people seemed to understand Biblical wisdom. He remembers thinking that most adults just did not "get it," or grasp that everything is possible.

His father worked for Delta Airlines, so Pete grew up around airports with a love for airplanes and anything that flew. Pete also grew up watching television shows about firefighters and other public safety action-adventures that fueled his imagination. He recalls wonderful hours of pretending his big wheel was a fire truck or imagining how cool it would be to have a barber's chair in his room because it would have made an awesome helicopter. His imagination was non-stop, always looking at how to make things more exciting and fun. He was armed with his Biblical wisdom of "everything is possible" when he tried to copy his favorite actor on the TV show S.W.A.T. and burned his hands trying to rappel down a wall...one of the things he learned the hard way... So this was his quest in life; to make his dreams reality.

Later in life Pete found the things he imagined as a child unfolding as realities in his life – becoming a public safety worker, firefighter and instructor as well as earning a pilot’s license and flying airplanes and helicopters. Whatever his heart desired, life would bring the opportunities and he only needed to say, “Yes,” and be willing to follow his instincts. This is when he started to realize his gut and heart were “thinking-organs.” These “thinking-organs” would produce their own type of prayer life that gave life to his dreams if he simply followed their guidance. They were his silent guides, leading him through life to the right opportunities with subtle feelings and impulses – and sometimes very clear “knowings.”

He questioned and questioned and in his journey the answers came, sometimes they weren't the answers he'd expect, but eventually he learned, “be careful what you ask for, you will get an answer!” He experienced his most profound "silent dream" coming to fruition in 2002 when he opened his mouth and out of nowhere his words said "I need a laptop." His wife, Jennifer, was stunned and asked, “Why?"

"I am going to write some books." Pete answered. He had no idea where this compulsion came from. He was as stunned as his wife. So he went out and bought the laptop. That evening, he found he had purchased a very expensive card game – not knowing what to do with the laptop other than play Solitaire. But, after playing Solitaire for about three-days, he just sat down and started to type. Before he knew it he had typed 5,000-words. He had no idea what he wrote, but it sounded good enough. So, the next day this continued – and the next and the next. Until eventually he had a number of lengthy essays.

He had no idea what he had written or why he written it; it all flowed from his subconscious. Not knowing what to do with these essays – which turned out to be chapters of his book – he did what any good son would do; he gave them to his mom who encouraged him to keep writing. In the end, it took him two weeks to write a book. Each time he would read the book he would become inspired to add to it. By the time he had read and re-read the book a few times, he had added another 10,000 – 20,000 words. It took on a life of its own.

The collective unconscious exists all around us, much like radio waves, and different frequencies of energy are all around us. The collective unconscious has all knowledge in it; we can tap into this knowledge by tuning in the right frequency much like a TV or radio tunes-in to the right frequencies. Desire becomes a practical tool to tune us into the right information. Once we have connected to the right desire and information we now add the right amount of belief to achieve results. If you can clearly see what you want you will get it. This is the science of prayer. This is where he came up with his Belief Formula.

Pete's life has been shaped by his openness to the word of the subconscious. It is through his openness to opportunity, that his gut and heart have taken him on impossible journeys. He never wanted to be a writer. As a matter of fact in high school he hated English class and was actually had to repeat it. But he did have big dreams that his writing and teaching have helped him accomplish. Because he said, “Yes,” to an impulse from his heart, an unlikely event led him to the realization of several dreams he otherwise may not have realized.

“Prayer is much older than any religion, and can be explained in such a way that it will become clear what a real and powerful tool we have access to in Prayer — ALL of us.
If you don’t pray because you think it is a religious thing, you should think again. Prayer is thought; thought is prayer. It is our thoughts that create our lives; we just need to learn what that means and start using what we learn. The greatest minds of all-time have always said thing like, “As a man thinketh, so it is done unto him.”
Prayer works the same way for everyone — the only difference between one person and another is their understanding of how such things operate. As a child, I knew I was supposed to be talking to God, but I had no real concept of how to make my wishes heard.”

After years of studying medicine, religion, religious history, physics, energy psychology, and the realm of the human mind and thought, it has become clear that we have simply been ignoring the obvious to our own detriment. We have a valuable and powerful tool in Prayer; we need only understand it and start using it constructively in our lives.

At times things might look scary, but if your heart says, "Yes!" you will achieve it. People will look at a mountain, feel overwhelmed and never take the journey. Phillips Provides Copyright Basics for Writers

AT FCCW we have many members in different stages of the publishing journey. We have many beginners as well as many accomplished authors.

Our latest speaker J. Winston Phillips, a retired physician, is currently working on two novels. The first, Making the South Beautiful One Procedure at a Time; Recollections of a Southern Plastic Surgeon, is told through the eyes of his main character, Bocephus Beauregard Beaumont, IV, MD as he recounts his life as a Plastic Surgeon in the fashionable Buckhead District of Atlanta, GA. His second novel, a medical-legal international thriller deals with human cloning and the legal issues surrounding the cloned individual.

Dr. Phillips has an extensive educational background which has contributed to his wide and varied interests both in fiction and in the business world. In addition, to an M.D. from the University of Louisville, Dr. Phillips also has an M.B.A. from Jacksonville University, a J.D. from Florida Coastal School of Law and LL.M. from Thomas Jefferson School of Law. While in law school Dr. Phillips took an upper level course in Intellectual Property, dealing in depth with copyrights and trademarks. It is this specific knowledge which is useful to the writer in protecting his writings. Dr. Phillips hopes to educate doctors and writers with all his extension and knowledge in the field of law and business. It is this training that he shared with us.

A Copyright is a form of protection provided to authors of original works of authorship fixed in any tangible medium of expression which can be perceived, reproduced, or otherwise communicated directly or with the aid of a machine or device.

The U.S. Constitution, Article I, Section 8, clause 8 provided Congress with the power to promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Rights to their Respective Writing and Discoveries. In addition, clause 3 provided Congress with the additional power to regulate Commerce among the several states.

The Copyright Act of 1909 provided for a dual system of copyright protection. Unpublished works were protected by common law (state law), while published works were granted federal protection upon publication as long as copyright notice was in the 1) correct form, 2) correct place, and 3) on all copies of the work. Otherwise, copyright protection would be lost.

The Copyright Act of 1976 did away with the dual system of protection. Fixation in a tangible medium of expression, rather than publication denoted the time when Federal rights attached. The Act retained mandatory notice requirements for copyright.

The Berne Convention Amendment, effective March 1, 1989, eliminated the notice requirements to comply with the Convention. However, Act provided that if proper notice was attached, defendant could not claim innocent infringement in infringement case.

Copyright protects the following categories; 1) literary works, 2), musical works, 3) dramatic works, 4) pantomimes and choreographic works, 5) pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works, 6) motion pictures, and 7) architectural works.

Copyright does not protect works that have not been fixed in a tangible form of expression. In addition copyright does not protect titles, names, short phrases, slogans, ideas, works consisting of information that is common property and containing no original authorship and scenes a faire.

Copyright owners have the following exclusive rights; 1) to reproduce the work in copies or phonorecords, 2) to prepare derivative works based on the work (e.g. screenplays, translation into another language), 3) to distribute copies of the work to the public by sale or other transfer of ownership, 4) to perform the works publicly, 5) to display the works public ally, and 6) in the case of sound recordings, to perform the work public ally by means of a digital audio transmission.

As a general rule, for works created after January 1, 1978, copyright protection lasts for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years. Joint works protection last for the life of the last surviving author plus 70 years. Anonymous works, pseudonymous works and works made for hire enjoy copyright protection for 95 years from first publication or 120 years from the year of first creation.

Copyright ownership rights can be assigned or transferred individually or in combination with other rights. Portions of an individual right can be transferred, e.g. assignment of right to perform work in New York City only while retaining rights to perform work all other locations.

Copyright protection is secured automatically when the work is created when the work is fixed in a copy or phonorecord for the first time. Although not required, one may place people on notice by placing on copies of the work the following three elements; 1) the symbol ©, or the word Copyright, or the abbreviation Copr., 2) the year of the first publication of the work, and 3) the name of the owner of the copyright in the work.

Although the work is copyrighted when created and fixed, you are not able to bring an infringement suit in federal court unless you work is registered. Additionally, registration establishes a public record of the copyright claim.

Registration of a copyright is relatively simple and inexpensive. The website, http://www.copyright.gov, provides the necessary instructions for submission. Requirements include a completed application fee, a non-refundable filing fee of thirty-five dollars if filing online, and one complete copy of the work being registered if it is unpublished or two complete copies of the best edition of the work if it has been published.

Roberts Speaks About Children of Dreams

Lorilyn Roberts' first book, The Donkey and the King, had a second printing last year, and is a beautifully illustrated children's book published by Virtualbookworm.

In her latest book, Children of Dreams, the many pearls of suffering Lorilyn Roberts has experienced enable her to share deeply from the heart, and her writing, riveted with emotion, shows how God is able to restore dreams and bring redemption. Combined with her Biblical studies, she holds a unique perspective to write from a Christian worldview.
Ms. Roberts is intimately familiar with adoption, having also been adopted as a child, and is able to present the spirit of adoption, as never before captured, in Children of Dreams.

As an author she shared her experiences with marketing her work. She handed out packets to each member filled with information for Publishing and Marketing for the Unknown/New Author. Less than a year ago Lorilyn knew nothing about marketing. She took a seminar by Randy Ingermanson and she was off. She meticulously kept a record of her trek through publishing and marketing. The packet contains resource after resource along with a mini critique about what she liked and what she didn't like. "The hard part about being a writer is getting people to buy your book." However, with new technology such as the Internet and Print on Demand publishing you can reach the world. As Lorilyn puts it (Paraphrased) Here I am this unknown writer from Gainesville yet I had nearly two hundred hits to my website from people outside the US and over 8,230 hits here in the US.

She explained how she uses her website as a tool. Her website sponsors have records of who comes to the website, how long they stay and what they are looking at. Based on this information she can design a website that is more user friendly by adding more material that drive people to her site (such as pictures which account for 70% of the hits at her website). Once she realized pictures were important to people on her website she added more pictures. This has multiple benefits.

1. The more people that are drawn to her website the better she does in search results (like Google) Currently she comes up as the fourth entry on page one out of over a million results when you type in Adoption from Nepal ( this vary from day to day). Since March 20, 2009 she has had 1,749 views at her website.

2. Google Adwords, pays for clicks

3. The more exposure she has for her book.

4. Under Google images, she is the first ten results for videos of adoption from Nepal and adoption from Vietnam What an accomplishment! Again people see her name and book over and over again. It adds credibility to her work and increases the opportunity people will buy her book.

Another way to come up in searches is to review other people's blogs. If you do this, your review links to your own book and also brings your name or book up in a search result.

Reviews are important so you want to establish a social network to get reviews. She gave us a list of resources on how and where to get reviews. Also television or radio interviews are always great opportunities for the author to talk about their book. But it also has the added benefit of linking to your website and adding to the audio visual component of your website. As the statistics show, most people surfing the net are looking for visuals. Video has an even higher rate. Sites like Youtube offer another tool to get your name and your book out on the web.

This blog is just a snip-it of information that Lorilyn shared. She has an amazing knack for research and organizing data. She is a natural teacher in that, she saw value in every aspect of her journey to write. In the end she became so much more than an author. She became an inspiration to those going through the adoption process and a mentor for those going through the writing process.

Bevan Encourages Writers to Use Their Gifts

Last night's impassioned guest was literary artist, musician and author Jan Atchley Bevan.

Knowing that the gift of writing is from God, Jan finds it a natural mission to be a mentor for writers with and without disabilities. As a blessed writer and one who overcame her own challenges with low vision she knows her role to inspire writers comes in the telling of the story of her own work. By second grade her imagination was in overtime and hasn't stopped since. Her imagination has taken her life on a unique journey as a literary artist, musician, composer author and poet. Her passions are too many to count. She fondly recalls the eight years she spent at the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens as Author in Residence and Museum Educator. She worked with hundreds of children through Art Connections a "hands on" art experience, which is award winning from numerous sources in Art Education. Jan’s literary art education program encouraged many children in the Duval County Public School System to be better writers through the “joy of reading”.

Jan started off as a psychiatric social worker however she would often say "I'm a social worker who thinks she is an author." One day this closet author met Christine Yovanovic a nurse who thought she was an illustrator and so Corky The Bathtub Who Couldn't Swallow was created. After her book was published she learned "authors shouldn't give up their day job." In search of a new career Jan was hired as a staff member of Art Connections in the education department of the Cummer Museum. Prior to the literary Art opening of this, her first children’s book, Jan was given the honorarium of the Author in Residence.

Jan is an ambassador for VSA Arts (Very Special Arts). Founded by Jean Kennedy Smith, VSA Arts, an affiliate of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., is an international organization that brings the art world to performing, visual and literary artists who just happen to have disabilities. Jan continues to be a teaching artist for VSA Arts of Florida.

Jan credits her imagination with her love of music. Although she can not read music she has no trouble composing music. She ascribes music with gifting her with discipline and imagination. She uses music to assist her when she writes her books or works on the many projects she is involved in. Music is a gift for the soul. Jan told a story of a brilliant plastic surgeon who was struck by lighting while on the phone. Prior to the lighting strike he could not read music, yet a month after the incident he could play Bach.

Her passion for music is evident yet the reward was even greater when her C.D. Heartstrings was produced by Museum Music of N.Y. a CD that includes the chamber music of Ensemble Encore Berkeley, California, the visual art of Susanne Schuenke, the photography of Ingrid Domiani, prose poetry of Jan Atchley Bevan and narrated by the beautiful voice of Penny Mitton Hamilton, Ontario. This all was made possible through a ten thousand dollar grant from the Able Trust Foundation in Tallahassee, Florida. This was Jan’s last produced work as Author in Residence of the Cummer Museum. This was Museum Music’s first production of spoken word with chamber music, visual art and photography all set around prose poetry.

Providence continued to direct Jan’s life when a graphic artist and add agency Executive formally from Buffalo, New York found photos of World War II Japanese Soldiers tucked away in a tutored photograph album seemingly brought over to America by an unknown Solider of World War 11. It is from this discovery that her lasted passion took root. Jan and her co-author Ron Ferster have completed an historical fiction book titled Letters of the Lost Children World War 11.

They wanted to create fictional letters and stories from the point of view of the people in the photographs. In order to do this Jan and Ron researched Ancient Japanese culture as well as the age of Imperial Japan which ended when the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This extensive research allowed Jan and Ron to immerse themselves in the characters. What resulted is a stunning work of art. Their book was previewed during the Exhibit of Japan in Jacksonville at the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens. It was well received and opened conversation to new views through old windows broken by War and World devastation.

There are high hopes for this latest venture yet sadly the Japanese people do not have vast national memorials for their World War II soldiers, the war is viewed as a national shame and is not talked about nor was the history even taught in schools. (Our prayers are that this work of art will give a voice to the lost children of that generation and heal a nation from the outside in.)

The research Jan completed for this project is par for course in any of her undertakings. She attributes research, dedication to truth and integrity as the grit to accomplish her writing dreams.

She researched publishers, and prairie dogs and anything else she poured into her books. After 9/11 Jan wanted to reassure children that the world was still a safe place. Zachary Cooks Up Some Fun resulted, Ocean Publishing. The main character was a prairie dog, true to form illustrated by Danna Kleiman Garfinkel a visual artist, educator, illustrator and graduate of the University of Texas. Jan takes on her responsibility to protect the innocents of children and have morals for her stories. She also enjoys the props she accumulates that match the themes of her books.

Her latest prop, uh!m I mean co-author is "Fluffy" a big white bunny, one of her characters in her next children's book Lemon-aid Summers, to be illustrated by Susanne Schuenke.

Jan reminded us "you are only as good as your last book." Fluffy is there to remind her to sit down write, and to help her get into her new characters. Props are also important for book signings as a marketing tool. A remark about book signings; she once had someone ask her if the rolling pin she used as a prop was for sale? Often times at book signings some people even ask her "so what do you do?" She truly enjoys the events but reading out loud to a group of children is even more rewarding.

Last May she had the opportunity to read her book Corky the Bathtub who Couldn’t Swallow to a group of primary students in Great Tew Oxfordshire England. It was a delightful experience for her complete with the traditional cup of tea!

Life has literally been a journey of extraordinary pieces all coming together in Jan’s puzzle of life. Her end thoughts; “We all have gifts, which I see as the promises of God for our inner selves which allows us to bring our creativity into this world.”

Jan has always felt that she has seen life from the inside out, not from the outside in!” She uses her publishing rejections as mementos of her attempts to see her work come to fruition.

Beehner Shares True Wealth by the Book

Founder and CEO of Wise Counsel, John has worked with leading entrepreneurs over the course of his career, as well as owning his own businesses.

That experience would perfectly position him to write his book, True Wealth by the Book – a collection of inspirational stories targeted to business leaders about how 100 well-known Americans built character and learned moral and spiritual truths.

Despite his business experience, a fear of failure and insecurities about writing made John reluctant to author the book even though he sensed God’s leading. He ultimately obeyed the call and decided to hire a ghost writer for the project to overcome his concerns. During the process of writing the book, John says that he grew spiritually as he sought God in a deeper way. He encouraged FCCW members to follow their calling at all costs even if it means losing money on the project and having to confront tough personal obstacles like fear or pride.

While researching and planning the book, John received what could be called divine direction as to how best to reach his audience. While on the treadmill one day, he got a phone call in which he and the caller discussed the Ten Commandments. The caller asserted that they were not only the origin of spiritual law, but all moral law as well. After reflecting on the call, John realized that foundation for the book should be about moral and spiritual principles for acquiring true wealth. Like the Bible, John’s book would use stories, parables and illustrations to communicate the principles to business leaders.

With the book’s direction firmly established, John then needed to get his book printed and in the hands of CEOs and entrepreneurs. He determined that the best option for him was to self-publish. John shared his experience with the group including the extensive research he undertook before deciding on a printer in the Midwest.

To market his book, John joined PMA (a self-publishers group) and hired a PR firm to set up radio interviews. He also promotes the book through personal networking and his business workshops. The success of John’s book led to two subsequent reprints for a total of 15,000 copies printed.

Based on the principles in the book, John has also produced a video series called Genesis: The Business Workshop. John says that both the book and the video series have helped business leaders learn to trust God. He now hopes to take to the book and series to churches as well as marketing them on the internet.

Levy Combines His Love of Food and Writing

Larry Levy spoke to the FCCW group on June 11^th about writing as well as his love of food, which he attributes to the generosity of his parents.

“I grew up outside of New York City,” he explained, “Which made fine dining very accessible.” His parents introduced him to many culinary experiences, which sparked his love of cooking. Larry’s other passion, writing, produced several short stories and poems during his college years.

The combination of food and writing, as well as the influence of his daughters Mya, Lea and Ava all of whom have a penchant for helping out in the kitchen, became the catalyst for Mr. Levy’s first published book Harry The Hungry Frog, Harry Ventures Out. In this first book of the series we are introduced to a frog named Harry, who knows there is more to taste than bugs and flies. Harry goes on several adventures looking for yummy food and on the journey learns politeness and develops friendships. An added surprise is a pizza recipe at the back of the book.

In light of Mr. Levy’s personality, which is full of vivaciousness and enthusiasm, it’s no wonder he was dressed in a green shirt and frog patterned tie. As an entrepreneur who started and eventually sold his own business, Larry is no newcomer to the importance of promotion.

“You need to market your book as if it were a product,” Larry explained. And in doing so, Mr. Levy regaled us with many whimsical stories and encounters. “Marketing your book takes you out and about which only helps the networking process, thus producing sales.” The author showed true excitement and shared many stories about the process. Here is someone totally passionate about their work.

Mr. Levy commented on the fact, that through networking you can find the talent you need.

His short children’s story, Harry The Hungry Frog, took eight months to complete, from conception to store shelves. It took three months to find an illustrator. His, “Diamond in the rough,” was a stay at home mom who was an illustrator for children’s books. It was a perfect fit.

Larry first addressed the group with, “I’m going to re-kindle that desire within all of you to embrace writing, welcome the promotion process, and enjoy it every step of the way.” He discussed how he uses his vehicle as a traveling book sale van. “I have a table and promotional materials at the ready wherever I go,” Larry beamed, “You never know when an opportunity to promote will arise.” Mr. Levy stressed the importance of channeling through your local Chamber of Commerce. “Get out there and use all the tools available,” he encouraged.

Larry Levy has several children’s books on the horizon-it would not be surprising though if several stories came out of his many promotional experiences. He is available for speaking engagements and his talks are centered on running a small business, writing, and developing effective marketing techniques. Who knows he may even whip up a meal, food for thought anyone?

Mandela Recommends Dog Ear to Writers

"Dog Ear" spoke my language, says author Josette Mandela, who spoke at FCCW on Thursday, June 4th.

FCCW is blessed with many diverse writers. Some always knew they wanted to write, while others happened into writing. Josette Mandela is one of those writers that just happened into it. She is the author of Money is Freedom and Safety. Her book combines the features of a workbook and works like a step by step guide on how to get your financial house in order and have fun doing it. She wrote the book in just weeks, it just flowed out of her. She wrote the book freehand whenever she had the chance. One time she was writing in the repair shop while her car was being worked on. The ease that came with writing encouraged her to write another book. This time that plain white page seemed a little more daunting.

She shared her solutions for getting over writers block. She suggests going for a walk or really anything that will break your routine and get your creative juices flowing. Call that special friend that always encourages you and stands by you no matter what.   Finally she said find your passion, the written word comes much easier if you are passionate about what you are writing.

Josette explained how to get the most out of your walks; observe your surroundings, you never know what unique information you will discover from the simplest things. She told a story about this road she was traveling down. The road had many different kinks in the road, when she sat down to research why. She discovered all these kinks in the road turned out to be special places that the builders decided not to pave over so instead they adjusted the road to make room for the cemeteries and ancient places. SO paying attention to the littlest thing can bring out great inspirations for stories. Keep notebooks or a tape recorder with you all the time so you can jot down ideas. After your walk take some quiet time to meditate and let the information sit and sink in to see what God will do with it.

Another trick for Josette overcoming writers block is to have an accountability partner. This is that person that you can talk to and they never have discouraging words. Many of us have friends who can inadvertently discourage us from writing. These are the people that will often tell you "You can't write a book"    "What makes you think you can be a writer" Sometimes these people can be close family and friends. Don't listen and don't hold it against them, just realize that in life there is always opposition. More importantly DON"T TALK YOURSELF OUT OF WRITING THE BOOK! We all have our little voices that can discourage us from time to time. So choose your support partner wisely, this should be the person that would go skydiving with you! You must allow them to be honest and inspire you, remember they care about you and are not correcting you to discourage you but to help you improve!

Once you choose your support partner you should now set goals. You will never complete the book unless you set goals. Josette uses Outlook, creates tasks and blocks off time to keep herself accountable. This helps her meet her goal of sending her support partner an email at the end of everyday to make sure she is working on her goals. After a while you will discipline yourself to write.

Once you've started writing, the key to keep writing is to be passionate about your subject. If you are not passionate about your subject you'll notice you have dozens of start ups and never get them done. Ideas are not the problem, its our passion about the ideas. Today with the Internet the world is literally at your finger tip. You can do research and bring Japan into your living room. If you are looking for ideas you can use Google trends, research what people are talking about. If you have an idea you are passionate about research what's been written about it and maybe find a new perspective on it.

If you need more inspiration Josette recommends the Prosperity Bible. It is a collection of short stories from successful people such as Napoleon Hill and Ben Franklin. It will help you see what other people have done to be successful or inspired.

Josette learned from her first book that print on demand offers the best publishing option. She used Dog Ear Publishing. She found them very easy and fun to work with. Her background in computer science did not offer her any direction when it came to getting published. She found Dog Ear Publishing talked in a language she understood, were reasonably priced and offered many extra specialized services.

She always carries several copies with her and found that she could sell books just talking to people at the airport. She has received positive feedback about her book, from how easy it is to read to it offers immediate results.

Tosca Lee Researching Book Number Three

Tosca is the award-winning author responsible for two Christian Fiction books, Demon: A Memoir and Havah: The Story of Eve.

The members of FCCW were in awe last Thursday night as Tosca Lee shared her writing experience and expertise. Tosca's first book, Demon, challenged some of the Christian community with its unsettling title and cover. "I wanted it to gain attention," Tosca said. "I wanted people to think when they saw it." Demon is the account of history before the earth’s creation to the present day, as narrated by a fallen angel.

A management consultant, Tosca was driving home one day when the idea for Demon came to her. At the time, she planned to complete a book about a woman warrior. Demon’s story, however, did not let her rest until she completed the work. Writing passionately for three months, the book was finished but did not sell for five years until she rewrote what was essentially a monologue into more traditional narrative form. This doubled the length of the book—and won her a multi-book deal from NavPress.

As Demon went to press, Tosca was immediately under time constraints to complete the second book. After six months of research and another six of writing, she completed Havah. "Heinous and grievous," Tosca informed us. "The first draft is always heinous." Havah, a retelling of Eve’s story, required expansive research or order to provide the known details regarding life back then.

She is now preparing to write her third book.

Tosca, the runner-up for Mrs. USA in 1998, is extremely approachable and human! She answered our questions and had us sitting on the edge of our seats for more. Her intelligence and creativity are obvious and alluring.

Her advice to writers: approach agents or editors with a stunning query.

Cudd Writes to Help You Sell Your Home

Chrissie Cudd encourages writers to write about things they know and do. This is just what she did with her latest book.

First Coast Christian Writers was honored to have speaker Crissie Cudd, accomplished Realtor® and author, during their weekly meeting on May 14^th, 2009. Her story presented the possibility of writing in our own areas of expertise for the benefit of others. For Crissie, this area is Real Estate. Though Crissie Cudd has worked in real estate for all of her adult life, she has been writing for even longer. Her first book, A Day in Outer Space, was written when she was only four.

As she grew up, her love of writing continued until, as a young mother, she wrote children’s stories for her own daughter. Later, while living in Naples, Florida, she also began writing letters to the editor of the local newspaper, which eventually led to writing well received articles in the same paper. Chances are good that you have read her real estate advice in the past, because she has published over a dozen articles for the internet’s “Total Real Estate Solutions”. Many of her high demand articles have been reprinted and are now posted all over the World Wide Web.

Little did Crissie know that the Real Estate market would take the terrible downturn it has taken over the past few years, and that it would become, for many, easier to sell a house in outer space than in today’s market. Thomason Encourages Writers to Get Feedback

Bruce Thomason’s career in law enforcement began as a dispatcher in 1967.

In different jobs across three states there isn’t much that Bruce has not experienced--good and bad. Yet, Bruce described the powerful feeling surrounding the privilege of serving citizens throughout his career.

Bruce’s first novel, Body Toll, is an action-packed cop thriller about a serial killer set in our very own oceanfront community of Jacksonville Beach. Bruce shared that it took seven months to write the book. Once Bruce began writing, ideas and stories from his lengthy career poured out more quickly than he could write, so he began recording his stories.

Bruce shared his tips for both self publishing along and editing your manuscript. While Bruce’s experience with self-publishing was a positive experience, he hopes to publish his next book with a major publisher.

The single most important tip Bruce stressed to the group was to have a good editor. Whether it’s a professional editor, friend or relative, it’s extremely important to receive straightforward constructive feedback.

FCCW Members Spellbound by Chestnut & Son

Bobbie Jean Chestnut and her son Kent kept the FCCW members spellbound with their incredible story at the April 30th meeting.

Whew, how did I ever do it?─ might be a question we ask ourselves, after finishing a presentation for work, getting the kids to soccer practice on time and getting dinner on the table. The FCCW members learned soon enough, that these tasks pale in comparison to what Bobbie Jean Chestnut has faced in her life.

Bobbie’s book, “Whew How Did I Ever Do It?” is an autobiography that has the reader in a “page turner” mode. Raising four children, moving 20 times in 21 years as a military wife during the Vietnam war, facing a 9.2 earthquake while living in Alaska are just a few of her challenges.

But Bobbie’s biggest challenge came to her on Valentine’s Day in 1965, when her son Kent was born. Kent was born premature with no arms, and no legs. He was not expected to live more than 24 hours. He survived. The recommendation was to place him in a facility. But Bobbie wouldn’t hear of it. As she said, “If your healthy child suddenly became handicapped from an accident, would you send your child away?”

Bobbie treated Kent like the rest of her children. She fought with teachers and principals to help him succeed and became an advocate for the disabled. Today, Kent is 44 years old, living independently, working and writing a book of his own.

Kent calls his mom, his hero. He stated, “You should embrace who you are. God has given each of us a purpose to be here.” Kent talked about being treated normally by his siblings. He never really felt different, which is a true testament to his mom, as she treated him the same as the other children. Both mother and son attest, that God has a way of sending people to you when you are in need. “God gives us strength to go through it,” Bobbie explained. She learned early on to swallow her pride and accept help.

On the writing process, Bobbie explains to listen to your inner voice to write, and then do it! No more talking, just do it, write (right) from the heart. Write what you know.

Listening to Bobbie and Kent was inspirational, to say the least. It was an education in love, patience, humility, strength and determination. One of Bobbie’s favorites, Philippians 4:11 states, ‘Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have found in whatsoever state I am, therewith, to be content.’

Gunter Motivates Writers to Chase Dreams

First Coast Christian Writer’s Group had the privilege of meeting Almon Gunter, Author of the book Focus on the Final Seconds.

Focus on the Final Seconds, has received 5 out of 5 stars on Amazon.com. Almon considers himself a “country boy” and advises anyone who writes, to write however you talk.

“To have what you want you create it.” Almon ran for Florida State University until the age of 22, when he entered the corporate world, for 6 years. He then quit his job to chase his dream. At the ages of 29 and 33 he became the 13^th fastest runner in the world, when competing in the Olympics.

Almon is passionate about everything he does. He wrote his book in 30 days, and says that your best writing comes when you do not understand your writing.

Almon also does motivational speaking, mostly in very large corporations, and runs several sports training camps for youth.

On February 18, 1988 he started his company, and his first client was CSX Transportation. Quitting his job at Barnett Bank, he did not turn back, and began achieving for himself. He cautioned us to be aware of family and friends that may say what we were seeking after could not be done. “Don’t waste energy on “downers”.” He goes on to say, “Friends that are not in from the beginning cannot get in at the end.”

Almon truly is a motivator, and is an inspiration to listen to!

Elsheimer Urges Artists to Answer Creative Call

The delightful and funny author, speaker, musician and artist Janice Elsheimer treated the members of FCCW to a deliciously engaging evening during their April 9th weekly meeting.

Her words were a feast of encouragement not only for those who wonder if they are artists, but also for those who do acknowledge their creative gifting but so far haven’t understood that it is an actual calling. An artist can be one that paints with colors or words or musical notes or plants or any of a hundred other mediums, but because she was speaking to a group of writers, the reality that Yes, I am a writer, was permanently impressed on the pavement of our minds.

Janice taught us that those endowed with creative gifts are especially connected to the heart of God – God the Creator, and that for these gifts we are responsible to Him. They are meant to be cultivated and executed not only for us, but through us for the sake of the world. Janice also presented the fact that artistic gifting usually partners with the gifts of teaching, wisdom, and prophesy.

We were privileged to not only view firsthand but also to hear a short excerpt from her 1973 ‘hippie’ journal with a peace sign on the cover. As she read the entry aloud, it was easy to see that the energetic and adventuresome woman she is today is the same adventurous and energetic young person who recorded in that notebook. The final words of her entry were “Truck on!” We all laughed. She encouraged us to keep a journal as well, and recommended that we write in it for only 20 minutes a day. “Not ‘I have to journal for 20 minutes’, but rather, ‘I will only journal for 20 minutes’. She assured, “If you journal, you’re a writer”.

She encouraged us to be avid readers in our individual genres, and to remember that though everything we write may not be classified as a ‘Christian” project, nevertheless it will be informed by our worldview. Her attractive personality enhanced her words, causing them to be unforgettable. In fact, I can still hear her admonishing us to be proud of publishing success “not because, I’m all that, but because He’s all that!” Amen!

As a child, Janice, like many of us, wasn’t encouraged to pursue a career in the arts, though that’s what God had placed within her. Her parents, like many, believed her creative gifts were hobbies rather than possible career paths. (This blogger can certainly relate.) But God is sovereign, His gifts and callings are irrevocable, and He promises to fulfill His purposes for each of us. Janice has certainly proved His faithfulness. Today she is not only educator and teacher, avid gardener and accomplished musician, but also the author of three published books which include Grounded in the Garden, Word Weavers, and the best seller entitled The Creative Call.

The Creative Call was originally written for creatively gifted students that needed direction, but has become the attentive and nurturing parent that many Christian ‘would be’ artists desperately need. God is using this book to ‘fill up that which is lacking in the (creative portion) of the Body of Christ’. There is nothing else like it available. Earlier in her life she had looked hard for a book that would minister to her as a Christian artist, and couldn’t find exactly what she was looking for, so, she wrote it herself. Today Christian artists in many fields are thankful that she heard the creative call.

As the meeting ended, I wished I could just take Janice home for encouragement and clarity whenever I needed it, so I bought The Creative Call. After I returned home, I read the first two sections of my newly signed book, and was awed at the wisdom and skill in which the nutritious words were presented. I even cried a little as some of those words reached deeper than is humanly possible. Anyone who is hungry can feast on the words of wisdom that Janice has obediently transcribed for us, for she preserved within the pages nutrients we will need in order to reach our full stature.

Thank you, Janice, for your obedience in feeding the sheep. Keep on truckin’ sister!

Resnick Urges Writers to Use Their Gift

When people use the word author, it is assumed that writing books is the person's livelihood. Hal Resnick, an author of five books, sees writing more as the natural extension of his work!

He used three different means of publishing, he expounded on the pros and cons of each method.

McGraw Hill contacted Hal while he was a professor at Temple University. They asked him to write an education series to inspire middle school students into careers in Engineering and Construction. This added to his credibility as a writer but was also a marketing tool he could use when promoting his consulting business. As writers, big name publishing companies are the Holy Grail of success. It is a coveted position to be sought after by one of these companies. Aside from the up shot of adding credibility, working big name publishing companies is not the satisfying experience one would think. The writer is no longer the Integral component of the process. It is now in an assembly line though red tape and equipment which will eventually lead to a book.

The second method was when he was contacted to write a book to help kids with the metric system. Here he needed the book to be a camera ready copy. He turned the book in to a math publishing company. The book was published within three months and he never heard about it again.

The third way was self-publishing or the print on demand, such as LuLu. This option is readily available to all writers. With this method you pay a small fee, you receive your ISBN numbers, some connections to websites and other services a writer may need. a nominal fee is than charged for the book to go to print. You set the sale price, pay the fee and viola you can have as many books as you want printed. Books are only printed when paid orders are received - and can be printed in batches of one! Hard cover books cost more than paperback and will take a few weeks longer to publish.

Writing and publishing books are Hal's way of giving back to the world. He is very knowledgeable and meticulous. Watkins Writes for "People With Abilities"

Tonight Vicky Duffer Watkins provided illuminating insights about “why that lady in the wheelchair is smiling.” As an active member of Jax FOB and Mandarin Toastmasters clubs and an on-line columnist for the Florida Times-Union, Vicky shared three special insights. They included her worst fear, how to get articles published and samples of her work.

Most people’s number one fear is public speaking, but at one time Vicky’s worst fear was dying. That was before she began her spiritual walk with the Lord. Vicky shared how she is not afraid to die; rather she has chosen salvation and walks with the Lord. Her spirituality shines in her writing.

Vicky’s initial aspiration was to write a great American novel. She now rights about real situations that happen to real people. In her on-line column titled “People with Abilities,” Vicky writes about the experiences of people with disabilities. Her articles have also been published in several magazines.

Vicky’s words of advice to aspiring authors are to “make it meaningful.” Her person writing goal is to increase her on-line readership and write more articles. Her secret to successful writing is to pray first!

Webster Gives Insight Into Publishing

Gerard D. Webster’s new book In-Sight came out in December. In-Sight is about fall, forgiveness, and redemption. It is for anyone who believes that a Higher Power has a hand in destiny.

On March 19, 2009, First Coast Christian Writer's member, Jerry Webster, shared his experiences in writing a novel with the First Coast Christian Writer’s Group.

He began by telling the group, “Experience is what you get right after you needed it.” He went on to explain that we all bring our experiences to our writing. He said that writing a novel is like going through pregnancy:

Conception: First you have the seed of an idea.
Growth Stage: You start in an outline form and put words to it. The characters begin to take over the story.
Giving Birth: Finally the time comes when you share your writing with others.
Radical Surgery: Re-write based on the input of others.
Owning Your Baby: Your book is finished.

Then the real work begins. You look for an agent and a publisher.

Publishing the book is not the end of the story. You have to market the book to the world.

Touchton's Ministry Hits Thousands Monthly

Cheryle Touchton is a writer, a traveling missionary, and a successful businesswoman.

Her nickname is the Pocket Full of Quarters Lady because she travels about the country talking to people about Jesus while handing out quarters. After retiring from a successful business career in technology, she went full-time into Christian ministry as a missionary, motivational speaker, and a writer. She has published two books: A Pocketful of Quarters: 5 Steps to Loving God, and Pocketful of Christmas: Having a Purpose Filled Advent.

Cheryle explains The Secret To Writing as the same secret to any other successful venture. The key is the ancient Jewish greatest commandment - the Sh'ma - "Love God with all your mind, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength." To that she adds the second greatest commandment from the New Testament: "Love your neighbor as yourself." Love is the key to writing. She states that God has given us secret Wisdom with which we can actively participate--IF we love Him.

She set out 5 steps to accomplish this:
1. Follow God - mind to mind.
2. Please God - heart to heart.
3. Embrace God - soul to soul.
4. Serve God - strength by Strength
5. Love God's children - neighbor to neighbor.

To enlarge our writing capacity, she challenged each person to seek the answers to several questions:

What do you know? What do you care about?
What is your "edge" and what does it mean?
What delights you?
What life experiences do you bring to writing?
Why do you write?

Cheryle's talk was jam-packed with helpful information to both aspiring and published writers; but her talk encompassed much more than just writing. It's evident that she "walks the walk." Feeney Teaches How To Design a Book Cover

FCCW was graced with Author/Speaker Rik Feeney. Hands were busy writing as Rik expounded on his life, career, and secrets on how to get the most marketing value out of your book. Rik is an engaging speaker that had the audience on the edge of their seat trying to absorb all the great information he extols. Thankfully he had handouts for all of us which had all the great tips he went over.
Rik has a passion of sharing his knowledge with others. He demonstrates this by becoming coaches to athletes and up and coming writers where he can, through the skills and wisdom he learned, in his stations of life, direct others on their own paths.
Twenty five years ago Rik was a competitive gymnast through High School and Temple University . During his career, Rik owned and worked at private gymnastics clubs where he trained gymnasts from state to national level competitors. Later he turned author.

Rik is the author of several books on the sport of gymnastics, the first of which was “Gymnastics: A Guide for Parents and Athletes” his latest book "Back Handsprings; The Secret Techniques" is featured in the movie "Fired UP." At FCCW he talked about the "three marketing stages of the book" and "marketing with book elements." Rik explains that books represent the author, the author is the product. In today's market where less than 17% of people buy books and less than 10% of readers get past the first chapter you must put out a product that will bring book buyers and readers to your book.

A good price point helps, but using the features of the book to do your marketing is key. An example of this is the book's cover which should pass the ten foot rule; from ten feet a person should be able to tell what the book is about by its picture and title. The title should lead with the main point and be 5-7 words in length. This will help when people are doing an Internet search and aid them while they are book shopping at the stores.

Rik also explains how placement of the title and your name on the spine is important when your book is shelved in a library. The idea is to leave a one-inch space at the bottom of the spine so the author name is not covered by the library's coding.

His great ideas continued as he explained how to use the back cover blurb to list benefits and especially a "call to action" requesting the consumer to buy the book. Rik also talked about book size, white space between paragraphs, and sub-headings to help grab the attention of readers.

Raven's Books Originate In Her Life Journals

FCCW was honored to have Raven captivate us with her contagious love of life as she shared her experiences as a former Broadway star, international model and now author.

Raven has published two books: The Runway Models Handbook; and A Day in the Life of a Runway Model with Image & Fashion Tips from the Trade, detailing how models stay beautiful on the road.

Raven began by telling us, “I am not a writer, I am a talker.” Although Raven is an exceptionally dynamic speaker, it isn’t difficult to see that she is a gifted writer as well. She has been writing as long as she can remember, journaling life as it happens. Her books are an overflow of who she is and what she has learned along the way.

She says “Writing is something I volunteer to do.” Her passion shined through as she read us an excerpt from her most recent book, A Day in the Life of a Runway Model. The book is well-written and timely, especially for a culture where women and teens, fascinated with the model industry, need to understand healthy body image.

Raven is currently working on two more books. My Decade on Broadway will highlight that exciting time in her life. Cancer Times Two: A Survival Guide for Caregivers is based on her experience caring for both her mother and husband as they simultaneously battled cancer. The book will focus on the health of caregivers and encourage them to take care of themselves so that they can continue the vital job of caring for their loved ones.

Raven is a native New Yorker, a graduate of The Dalton School and Sarah Lawrence College with advanced degrees from the University of Madrid, Spain and NYU. She is also an adjunct professor at Florida Community College.

Szaroleta Briefs Writers on Newspaper Basics

Florida Times-Union Arts and Entertainment editor, Tom Szaroleta, fielded questions about how to get published in the local newspaper.

He discussed the difficulties and some of the reasons why it is so difficult for a freelancer to get published.

“Although the paper most likely won’t print a story unless it’s incredible,” says Tom Szaroleta, “it is possible to get published.”
Tom’s area is the arts and entertainment department. This includes concert reviews. He enjoys his work because he gets to be creative about things going on around him.

He enjoys implementing humor in his work. But his humor runs out if a freelancer/anyone pitching a story calls him more than once. If there is a story that you wish him to cover, the more calls you make the less likely he will choose your story.

If there is an event you want covered or just an event you want the paper to know about, post it for free in the events section on the website.

Anyone can set up a blog of their own in the online paper. They regularly pick the best blog and post it.

On holidays, the Times-Union short story contests are excellent ways to win a little money and recognition from the paper.
Write for free under “Everyone’s a Critic”. Review a newly released movie in the theatres. Write your critical opinion in 75 words or less to just get your name in the paper.

For any religious stories that need to be covered, send these ideas to Jeff Brumly, the newspaper’s religion editor.

If you want your book to be reviewed and put on the book review page—note it is from a local author on the outside boldly. Send it to Brandy Allport. She is the book review editor, and also the only children’s book editor in the USA.

Remember be creative, be humorous, be incredible and most of all send it to the correct editor.

Shrum Encourages Freshman Authors

All FCCW guest speakers bring interesting messages and helpful hints to our meetings. But every so often we’re showered with additional, very useful material. Such was the case with Estelle Shrum’s presentation at last Thursday’s FCCW meeting.

In her presentation, Estelle described her life, and the troubling experiences that were foundational to her new book titled, He Is The Word, a compilation of poems written over two years. As she described it, her book is proof that a life visited by frequent, unhappy events out of one’s control, can produce both victory and a deeper relationship with God.

Estelle grew up in a house with an abusive father and a paranoid, schizophrenic mother. The effect of such a toxic environment led first to frequent panic attacks as a young woman, and later, two attempts at suicide. In later years, her daughter experienced some of the ripple-effects from her family tree, developing serious problems of her own.

Estelle related that today, both she and her daughter are living examples of God’s healing victory. As she pointed out, “The four best years of my life were when I dated my husband. And we’ve been married over forty years!”

Because all of Estelle’s poems are related to scripture, He Is The Word is both a resource for practical Biblical guidance as well as an escape into poetic literature. Glancing through the book, it is easy for one to pinpoint a topic of interest and be directed to a relevant poem. Each passage brings out the essence of scripture through insightful, tender paraphrase of God’s perspective.

Estelle told us the reason for the poetic format is to, “Encourage Christians and non-Christians to read the Bible.”

In addition to poetry, Estelle included sections at the end such as, “The Many Names Of Jesus,” and “The Bible Vs. The Koran,” -- an overview of the similarities and differences between two of the world’s most important books.

As for the “extra gift,” Estelle covered a large table with several, very helpful handouts such as:

“Avoiding literary scams”

“Writers Beware: Thumbs-Down Agency List”

“How To Find The Right Book Publisher”

“Fake Writing Contests.”

She included three long lists of Christian publishers and Christian self-publishing resources.

Estelle’s own book was published through an organization called, “Publish America,” a co-op company requiring no down payment by the author. As she put it, “It’s a subject of particular importance to all freshman authors!”

Queen Lily's Vet & Author Tells Her Story

At some point in our lives we’ve all experienced the trauma of a move. For children in particular, relocating to a new, strange place can be very unnerving.

That is the premise of Sharon Hoffman’s new book, The Story of Queen Lily. In it, Sharon relates to anxious young readers about the upside of moving. The story puts them at ease through well-written, child-oriented dialogue and delightful photos.

Photos of what? Of the main character, Lily, who happens to be a fluffy, gregarious cat with lots of experience on the topic.

Sharon, a veterinary dentist and oral surgeon, wanted to write a book about “something other than medical journals.” She and her family moved from Ohio to Jacksonville four years ago and, as she related it, the strain of the move became the seed of an idea for the book.

Queen Lily, their family cat, moved with them, but seemed to be the only one without trauma in the ordeal. As soon as they arrived, Lily went about exploring their new neighbors, the beach and the marshland around her new home. Thus, Lily provided both material and rationale for the story.

The story captivated members of FCCW at this week’s meeting through Sharon’s slides and discussion. She took it further by relating some important points about what it took to get published – a topic close to our hearts.

When she explored publishing options, Sharon found it too expensive, too complicated and that it took too long. As a first-time writer, she needed simpler approach, and was about to shelve the idea. Then, she found her answer at a small bookshop in Fernandina Beach where she met a “co-op publisher,” named G.W. Reynolds.

Mr. Reynolds explained his company’s minimal risk, fast approach to publishing. She agreed to the partnership he offered, and signed with Mr. Reynolds’ company called, High-Pitched Hum Publishing.

The happy ending is the book is now in print, and being enjoyed by numerous young ones, whether they’re moving or not.

Dr. Lorraine Facilitates FCCW Mission Revision

FCCW’s President, Dr. Haataia, spoke at the weekly meeting of FCCW where she facilitated the final draft of FCCW’s Mission Statement.

The original draft was formulated at the December 18^th FCCW meeting when the general membership submitted their views on why FCCW exists.

Lorraine guided the members through a brainstorming session in an effort to focus on the core values and key objectives of the group, now in its second year.

Comments and suggestions from the group were myriad, prompting Lorraine to comment, “It’s a real challenge to do this with a room full of writers!”

When the board was full of notes, the final, boiled-down version emerged which read,

FCCW’s mission is to support members through:

· Improving writing skills with education and critiques,

· Networking within the publishing industry, and,

· Holding each other accountable to achieve goals.

Of note, is Dr. Haataia’s handling of all the information. The sheer volume of all the input could have taken all night, but her skills in efficiency consulting among other things, got the job done, and right on time!

The remainder of the evening was dedicated to critiques of a few aspiring writers.

Bestseller Fast Shares How She Published

On Thursday night, we had the pleasure of hearing, Julie Fast, best selling non-fiction author, share on her life as a writer.

Writing for Julie, came as an answer for her own personal challenges and frustration. She had struggled with Bipolar Disorder for years and did not get the relief she hoped from medications. She was frustrated and felt defeated. Necessity is surely the mother of invention for instead of giving up; Julie developed a method for living with the challenges that being Bipolar creates. She invented and personally implemented into her own life, a Health Cards Treatment Plan. Within 6 months, she noticed great results in her own health and in her relationships. This treatment plan would become her first book.

While living in France in the early 2000 with her significant other she focused on making her Bipolar Health Plan and her next book, Bipolar Happens, available to others. After a frustrating experience with an agent, Julie decided to offer her first books as e-books. At that time, guidelines for e-books were non-existent, so she taped into her creativity and found a market for her copies of both books online by advertising with Google Ad Words. Browsers ordered and paid online with a credit card. Books were shipped to them in manuscript form. The first month her books sold $3,000 in copies.

Julie shared two valuable lessons that came from this experience

1. A web presence is essential for all writers.

2. Timing is everything – especially in a niche market.

Part of Julie's early success came because alternative information on mental health and specifically, bipolar disorder was not available. Once the medical profession realized the hungry market in this genre, they caught on. In the next four years, Julie sold three major books that are now bestsellers including Loving Someone with Bipolar Disorder (New Harbinger, 2004), Take Charge of Bipolar Disorder (Warner Wellness, 2006) and Get it Done When You're Depressed (Alpha Penguin, 2008).

Julie has clear goals and a tried and true system for all of her projects.

Here are a few of her suggestions for writing non-fiction:

Julie stresses that all writers need to have an outline before they write a book--this makes the writing a lot easier.
Find an agent you trust - a valuable asset in developing your career as a writer.
Perfect your query writing skills. Your entire career often depends on a query!
Query for an agent and wait for an agent you trust. Agents are the first and essential step to publishing a book.
Once you have an agent (if you have a good idea with a well written query, you can get an agent!) you will write a proposal on your topic. This proposal includes a brief sales letter about your book including why your book is needed, the audience and your ability to market the book. The next section is a table of contents, chapter summaries and two sample chapters.
Authors are part of a publishing machine. The more you know about the business side of writing, the more successful you can be in the industry.
Never sign away your electronic book rights (also called display rights), audio or foreign rights. Contract for written English print rights only and then negotiate for the rest.
Nothing provides return like good old networking. Suggestions include writers groups and conferences.
Create a professional photo to use on all of your materials.
If you have a niche market or you are good with Public Relations and Marketing –look into publishing yourself. Just make sure you get a professional editor as well as a professional type setter and graphic designer.

Julie regularly speaks on mental health topics at churches and other organizations and also works as a corporate consultant on the topic of employee productivity.

Waterhouse Writes Book in Nine Days!

Steve started his writing career in a way that most of us dream about. A nationally recognized publishing house contacted him and asked him to write a book on sales.

Tonight we had the pleasure of having Steve Waterhouse speak to our group. Steve is an accomplished sales consultant and author. Steve shared tips for working with a large publishing house, such as contract negotiation and how to manage a timeline for writing your book.

One of the many valuable tips Steve shared was Dianna Booher’s 13-step process for writing a book. Once his research was complete, Dianna’s strategies enabled Steve to write his book in nine days!

King Lays Down Life to Make Time to Write

Author Michael Ray King revealed he was a closet writer for twenty years before he decided to come out into the open. Due to insecurity, he felt his knowledge inferior or unworthy to be presented to the public.

Using John 3:16 as his guiding principle, he shed this apprehension. He concluded that he truly loved writing; therefore, he would lay down his life and “make the time” to write and ensure his book was published. Through intense research, he established his own publishing company and learned the art of creative self-publishing. His discussion was filled with exciting new ways to print, promote and sell.

His main advice to fellow writer’s: use John 3:16 as your guide, every day write 500 word articles at www.articles.com, and blog twice a week.

Together, Mike and his wife Bobbie, co-founded ClearView Press, Inc. in May 2007. Learning the publishing side of writing has been and continues to be an exciting and challenging part of their busy lives. As they move forward with new books, they wear many hats - author, publisher and marketer/promoter.

In this first of what will be many publications, Michael Ray King makes his debut with one of his favorite subjects, Fatherhood 101: Bonding Tips for Building Loving Relationships. The opportunity to help other men learn what it means to be a solid, caring father is his top priority. Author Auth Reveals Emmy's Question

Jeannine Auth was at her computer making final revisions to an historical novel she’d been working on for almost five years when she felt a tap on her shoulder.

Her granddaughter, Emily, who was ten at the time, plopped her diary on Jeannine’s desk and said, “Grannie, I’ve been thinking about this. You’re a writer. I want you to take my diary and make a book out of it so other kids like me—other children of alcoholics—will know they’re not alone. They need to know they can still be okay even if their parent doesn’t get well. But they’ve got to know to ask somebody for help.”

Jeannine flipped through the journal pages filled with shame, bewilderment, and anger--but also love and hope. Right then, she filed the historical novel away in the bottom of a filing cabinet, and Emmy’s Question was born. Although inspired by the writing and drawings in Emily’s diary, the story has been fictionalized to include experiences of other children of alcoholics as well. There are over 11 million children under the age of eighteen in the U.S. who have an alcoholic parent–not counting kids whose parents are drug-addicted. These children for the most part don’t have a voice and do not get help. They live in a culture of shame, denial, “don’t tell”, and isolation. Having worked through her own pain and understanding, “Emmy” became their voice.

Jeannine devoted the next two years to writing Emmy’s Question. The title came from Emily’s struggle to answer the question: How could Mommie choose wine over me? Her ultimate understanding that she could find the best in herself in spite of her parent’s alcoholism is a message of hope to any child living under the cloud of parental addiction. The book is carefully researched, and won the endorsement of the Betty Ford Center prior to publication. Jerry Moe, the Children’s Program Director for Betty Ford, critiqued the manuscript to ensure that information and messages presented were in keeping with current-day understanding of the special needs of these children.

Emmy’s Question has won a number of prestigious awards and multiple endorsements. It was published by Morningtide Press, a small independent publishing company owned by Jeannine and her husband, Dennis. The book is available through bookstores nationwide and all on-line booksellers. It is being used in counseling practices, schools, and rehab centers. She hopes to complete a sequel to Emmy’s Question over the next year, as well as resuming work on her earlier novel.

Jeannine stressed the need for aspiring writers to study and learn the craft of writing. She advised the group on some do’s and don’ts of the writing trade and suggested several books she found especially helpful. These books include:

Chicken of the Sea Author Says Surfing Saves

"God gave me surfing to save me," says Paul Hayden, author of Chicken of the Sea. What almost drowned him as a child saved him as an adult. He tried numerous times over the years to write the book, but today it's a reality.

When he lived in Long Island, Paul's friends used to call him the "Chicken of the Sea" because he was afraid of the surf after a near-death experience in the water. Not only did he overcome this fear, but surfing has become one of his passions. Paul says that surfing gives him strength--that the ocean is cleansing. Paul chose to publish this book with Tate, a partnership publisher.

Paul encourages writers to have the faith and conviction not only to write, but also to publish. It takes courage to write about your own life and the people you know, but it's also healing to do so.

After his book was published, one of the teachers from his high school wanted to add his book to her curriculum, but shortly after, she left the school so it didn't work out. What a great idea, however, for schools and colleges to use the books of their graduates!

Paul is currently working on a faith-based novel which he hopes to title, The Nonconformist. He also has a children's book, Byron the Lonely Christmas Tree, coming out very soon. He doesn't use scripture in his faith-based books. He tells his story just like it is from the joy and pain in his life--this is how people can see his faith.

"Write from your heart. Write what you know." Paul writes in a conversational style, no big words.

He writes all his first drafts long-hand. He picked up this habit when he was traveling a lot. He learned to make the most of his time whether he was in an airport, hotel or restaurant. He burned through quite a few ink pen refills and he saves the empty ones to quantify his progress.

"If you don't have a name, it's difficult as a first time author, but don't give up. Be patient. God has a plan for you. It's really great when people write to you and tell you that you've made a difference in their lives."

"Don't let anyone talk you out of following your dream," says Hayden. "And be sure to set deadlines, or you'll never get anything done!"

Wood Brings Books into the Classroom

"If the story is in you, it will come out," is what Jane learned from a UNF professor. Jane used to outline her writing and plan everything out before she wrote. But today she prefers not to worry much about outlining and structure, but focuses on letting the stories happen more organically.

Jane's books are for readers age 9-14. To be sure that she doesn't lose touch with her audience, Jane keeps up with movies and activities targeting children 9-14.

"My husband is a good sport, he'll see the movies with me," says Wood.

She has found her niche among teachers and students. Most of her presentations are in schools. Her books tell a story and provide history and other lessons for students. Jane also provides teachers with resources to use in the classroom: vocabulary words, discussion questions, an electronic scavenger hunt and more. Jane's first three books have been a great success and she's working on two more to add to her collection.

About Jane:

Jane Wood was born in Astoria, Oregon, a community rich in Scandinavian heritage. Jane’s family moved to Cocoa, Florida, when she was ten. She grew up near Cape Canaveral and watched America’s journey into space first-hand. During two of her college summers, she worked at the Kennedy Space Center.

She graduated from the University of Florida with a major in history and a minor in English. She taught junior high and high school in Central Florida, but left the classroom when her first son, Jonathan, was born. Three years later, along came Brian.

Jane remained a “stay-at-home mom” while her sons were growing up in Jacksonville, Florida. She was involved in school parent groups, Boy Scout activities, and their athletic associations. Jonathan played baseball, soccer and ran cross-county in high school. Brian played baseball, soccer and football in high school. Today Jonathan lives in Jacksonville Beach with his wife Jennifer, and Brian coaches college baseball and conducts clinics for coaches and young players.

When the boys were older, Jane spent three years writing part-time for a local newspaper. After earning a Masters degree in Education in 1988, she went to work at the local cable company as the Educational Programming Coordinator. During her 12 years there, she produced numerous television shows relating to education, including many that involved local youngsters in the productions.

Jane has also been involved in many international activities in her community. She is active in the Jacksonville Sister Cities Association and was elected to the board of directors for Sister Cities International. She has traveled to three of Jacksonville’s sister cities in Russia, China and France. Jane lives in Jacksonville, Florida, with her husband Terry. They like to travel and spend time with their family and friends.

Victims' Advocate Editor Speaks Up for People

This evening, Shirley Shaw, Editor of Justice Coalition's Victims' Advocate spoke at FCCW. She told the story of how the Justice Coalition came about and how she became involved with the organization.

Shaw also told us the story of an amazing man, Terry Lane, whom she describes in her article entitled, "Look at the Children," in the Sept/Oct 2007 issue of Today's Christian.

Shirley clearly has a passion for telling stories of the many interesting people she meets.

Your First Readers Aren't Your Audience

This evening, author Vic DiGenti reminded writers that our first readers aren't always our audience. The person who buys the book isn't necessarily the person who reads the book.

Vic suggested that writers do six things in an open:

Get the reader hooked.
Establish a bond between the reader and the lead character.
Set the scene through dialogue or action--show, don't tell.
Get conflict going.
Describe the hero or heroine briefly so readers can picture him or her.
Surprise or startle the reader.

"Writing is an obsessive-compulsive behavior," say DiGenti. I find this to be true as I continue on my quest for researching, experiencing, writing and publishing more and more ideas. There's never enough time to observe and write, experience and write, think and write, read and write! Anyone else agree?

Tropical Storm Fay Rains On FCCW

Identify your writing style
Identify your market
Match 'em up
Study your intended publication
Shift your style
Submit, submit, submit

Identify Your Writing Style

What kind of writer are you? It’s important to identify the type of writing you do so that you can find a magazine that fits your style. The number one complaint from editors is that writers send material that does not “fit” their publication. In other words, don’t send sci-fi to Guideposts. Some categories to consider:

Essays
Humor
Short story (fiction)
Spiritual
Reporting (facts only)
Anecdotal
Creative non-fiction (apply literary techniques to non-fiction)
Intellectual (In-depth analysis of complex topics)

Identify Your Market

Once you have a grasp of the style of writing that you gravitate toward, you can then hone in on one or two of the HUNDREDS of markets looking for your work. For instance, in the market reference books listed below, you’ll find extensive lists of types of publications. For instance:

If you always write funny pieces about your kids, then you can check out the markets on “Family,” or “Parenting.” Oh, you like to write stories FOR children. Check out the “Children” and “Teen/Young Adult” categories. Look under “Humor” just in case.

Now that you have a general idea, let’s get down to work.

Study Your Intended Publication

You’ve chosen “Highlights Magazine” and “Pockets.” Should you just go ahead and send whatever you’ve written? Not exactly.

1. Obtain writer’s guidelines

Most of these are on magazine web sites or on writer’s web sites.

The guidelines tell you what the publisher wants, the word count allowed, themes for certain months, when to submit, how to submit.

2. Read at least 3 copies of the magazine, which you can find at the public library, at book-store magazine racks, at church libraries, in

the doctor’s office! Request copies from the publication itself.

By studying what they publish, you’ll know if you truly can

write for them. You’ll find out if the editor is interested in pieces with a touch of humor or prefers anecdotes, especially from beginning writers. You often have to start with small pieces before the editor will trust you with bigger ones. Perhaps you aren’t quite up to their level of writing yet, but you can make a mental note and aim for the future.

3. For an in-depth look at a column or regular feature of a magazine, try

the following:

Take 4 colored markers and highlight these specifics as you read –

Quotes
Names and titles
Facts, statistics, technical lingo
Figurative language and structural details

Be sure that your article includes the same features.

Shift Your Style

As you study the magazine and writer’s guidelines, you find that your pieces always tend to have a word count of 2,000. They want 1,000. Start cutting. You write well for Catholic Digest but if you really want to send the piece to Guideposts, you might have to cut some references that are too denominationally specific. If you want to send the same piece to Reader’s Digest, you might need to take the same story and emphasize a different aspect (the adventure, instead of your biblical insight).

Tweak. Accommodate. In the process, you’ll get more practice writing!

If you don’t want to change anything, don’t send your piece anyway, hoping that the publisher will be so impressed that he/she will break his/her own rules.

Submit

Stick to the guidelines!!!!!!!!! Margins, paper, email, disk. SASE.

Stick it in the mail.

Helpful Hints and Resources

Even though you are writing a book, consider magazine publications as a means to adding writing credits to your resume and as a possible means of opening doors with book publishers.
Consider writing for contests. The practice will improve your writing skills and who knows, you might even win.
You can check out back copies of magazines from the library.
“The Writer” has an ongoing updated list of markets and highlights a different market area each month. May 2008- History. Read the library copy instead of purchasing.
“The Writers’ Journal” has monthly market lists, with new magazines and very specific markets.
Consider trade magazines if you have particular expertise in an area. Agriculture, dentistry, retail, you name it.

Nothing to write about? Think again.

Johnson's System Helps Writers Organize and Prioritize

"Use electronic folders liberally," Jean recommends, "and don't keep hard copies." While working in the advertising industry, Jean developed a simple and effective three-step system to stay on top of all her writing projects. This evening she shared her three secrets that can help all writers improve their productivity.

Use folders liberally

Have you ever wasted time looking for a chapter or an article that you wrote? If you apply Jean's system for managing your file folders, you can spend more time writing and less time searching for what you wrote. Computer file manager programs display your file folders and file names alphabetically. Jean recommends that you use numbers before folder and file names so that you can prioritize your projects like this:

Use a two-digit format in case your list goes beyond ten and use the same directory line-up for your web Favorites to capture related web links and references. Renumber your folders as your priorities change.

So let's assume that you're ready to start you work day on your top priority, your novel. So you click into the 01 My Novel folder where you see your progress:

Use Excel as a Giant Notepad

Jean uses Excel's powerful color and drawing tools to map her stories and characters. She turns off the grid lines and then brings her story to life using colors, text boxes and connector lines. Excel provides thousands of rows and columns, enough for you to plot out the details of just about any story.

Back up Often

Don't count on your computer to start up the next time you're ready to work. Every computer will fail eventually--it's just a question of when. Be sure to back up your files regularly on a hard disk, a CD and/or on flash drives (a.k.a. pen drives or thumb drives). You can also back up your files by posting them on a web site. If you lose your data, it's your own fault!

Time Management for Writers

Can't seem to find the time to write? Is a busy daily schedule keeping your fingers off the keyboard, or a pen from your hand? "Carving out the time to write can be easy and fun," says Leech, now a full-time writer after 23 years as a journalist.

Larry began his speech by asking each of us to jot down our top two favorite writing topics on separate sheets of paper. He collected our #2 priority and tore those up and then he asked us to crumple up our #1 priority. An idea isn't worth any more than that crumpled paper, he suggests, unless we're working on it or writing about it. Nearly all the ideas we had today will be lost if we didn't take the time to record them.

If we don't free up some time in our calendar to write, then we probably won't get around to writing. "A one hour TV show can eat up about two hours of writing time," says Leech. First you start anticipating that you want to watch the show. You might get a drink and a snack before you sit down to watch TV and get distracted with several other activities in the process. After the show is over it could take you a half hour to get yourself in the frame of mind to write.

Track Your Time For Two Weeks

Larry recommends tracking how you spend your time for two weeks. Note all the major activities that you're doing in either 15 or 30 minute increments. You need to do this every day throughout the day because you won't remember precisely what you were doing several hours after the time has passed.

"Most people neglect their health, their sleep and/or their relationships when they're trying to find more time in the day." Over time, any one of these can negatively influence your health or your relationships. At the end of the two weeks, analyze how you're spending your time and decide where and how you can make more time to write. You may be surprised at how much time you can find in your days if you eliminate lower priority activities.

Everyone Gets 168 Hours A Week

Everyone has 168 hours a week to use or lose. "If God is calling you to write and you aren't, then you're filling your schedule with things that don't belong there," says Leech. "Only you can decide what changes you need to make." Be creative. Larry told the story of a mom who taught her young children that she needed ten minutes of quiet time every hour, without any distractions. By writing ten minutes every hour, day after day, she eventually became a published author.

When you're writing, be sure to limit your distractions. Shut down your e-mail and the internet. Turn off your cell phone. Let others know that you are unavailable for ten minutes, thirty minutes, one hour or two hours. Only you can decide what will work best for you. Larry listens to rock music when he's writing a fast scene and slow music when he's working on a piece that's more serene.

All or Nothing

Larry closed his speech by telling a story about going to a seminar where he was asked to select one domino among many. As the dominos were being passed around, he decided that he wanted to find one with nine dots on one side and none on the other. When the box came to him, he found one very quickly. Since then, this domino has reminded Larry that if he decides to do something, he's going to give it his all or he's not going to do it at all.

Moore's Ten Disciplines for Writers

This evening Ron Moore described ten disciplines that have helped him write weekly sermons for the past several decades. If you focus on any one of these items, your writing career is sure to benefit.

Determine your goal. We need to know what we want to accomplish as a writer and what we want to accomplish through our readers.
Know your audience. Whether the audience is familiar or unfamiliar, it's vital to understand their expectations.
Set aside a day, time and place. Ron sets aside Thursday to write his sermons. He has a designated room with a computer and his books. He turns down Thursday invitations and delegates responsibility to his staff for everything that comes up on Thursdays.
Reduce distractions. Ron's writing room includes a computer and books, but no TV, radio or telephone! This is his writing room. He also has a prayer chair in his home. The only time he sits in the prayer chair is when he prays.
Develop a thesis statement. Every piece of writing, whether it's an article, a chapter or a book, must have one specific goal or theme that runs throughout. If you can't boil it down to one sentence yet, then you still have some work to do.
Write, write, write. Ron encourages writers to read books about writing. He recommends On Writing by Stephen King, Before We Get Started: A Practical Memoir of the Writer's Life by Bret Lott, and Writing for the Soul: Instruction and Advice from an Extraordinary Writing Life.
Revise, revise. Ron reminds everyone to appreciate how easy it is for us to revise now that we have word processors. Hemingway retyped one of his manuscripts 23 times!
Collaborate. Get involved with a writers critique group where you can work on improving your writing on a regular basis.
Read. It's important to read books similar to what you want to publish. Read good books in your field. Don't just read for pleasure, but read with the "eye of a writer."
Rest. God told us to work for six days and then to rest with him on the seventh.

maintain & post club signs so that visitors can find us easily
maintain stopwatches and other equipment so that everything is presentable and in good working order
arrange & confirm the room is ready 15 minutes before meeting is scheduled to begin
works with MC to ensure that meeting starts on time
at end of meeting assures that room is left in same condition or better than when group arrived

Today I, Lorraine Haataia, President FCCW, opened a checking account for FCCW. Initial deposit was $160 from funds collected for membership dues, donations and door prize tickets. I need to file for a nonprofit tax ID and then follow up with the bank. The Treasurer will handle the account. Officers make financial decisions by consensus.

Dr Lorraine Encourages Writers to Attend Conferences

If you want to be a writer, write. If you want to be a published author, go to writers conferences where you meet writers, authors, editors, literary agents and publishers. They can answer your questions and help you navigate your words into print, into magazines, into bookstores and into the hands of your readers.

Over the past several years, I've attended numerous conferences and just recently returned from the 21st Annual Florida Christian Writers Conference held at the Christian Retreat Conference Center in Bradenton, FL. First-timers may feel overwhelmed at a conference, but it's the best way to learn about the publishing world. Just dive in and start swimming. Attend lots of workshops. Ask a lot of questions and listen carefully.

What is your goal? I look forward to the day when I'm walking along a tropical shore line and I spot a stranger sitting in a beach chair reading my book. That's just part of my vision. I also look forward to the day when readers tell me that my books changed their lives for the better. I've read countless books that have improved my life and I'm very thankful for the authors who went to the trouble to organize and preserve their good ideas.

Ultimately, I'm looking forward to the day when I hear, "Well done my good and faithful servant. With you I am well pleased."

Whitfield Puts a Humorous Twist on Grammar

Have you ever thought grammar was boring? You wouldn't think so if you were here tonight for Kristi's humorous approach to the rules of language. Kristi believes that English has been devolving over the years, and we need to keep this in mind when we're writing. Rules are constantly changing and each style guide has a different twist on the rules. Guidelines for web articles are not the same as those for books in print, for example.

Do you ever end your sentences in prepositions? "That is the sort of bloody nonsense up with which I will not put!" Kristi says with her best Winston Churchill accent, as she describes some of the humorous moments in the history of language. Kristi's favorite grammar book is the Gregg Reference Manual by William Sabin. She encourages all writers to have a grammar reference in their writing toolbox.

For those of you who like to work online, you may want to add the Jack Lynch Guide to Grammar and Style to your favorite links. For those of you who don't like to worry about grammar, you may want to hire an editor or befriend a writing partner who is passionate about saying things the right way.

FCCW Members Affirm Our Mission Statement

Although we had low attendance due to Valentine's Day, I took the opportunity to talk to participants about our mission statement that we adopted from Word Weavers:

The mission of First Coast Christian Writers is to support our members in finding their unique voices and to develop their writing to a publishable level.

I wanted to confirm that our group is in agreement with this mission. We had good discussion about what it means to be a "Christian" writers group and I believe that we came to consensus on a few things:

we like the mission statement
we need to keep our doors open to all members, just as the church is open to all who want to enter
we want to open and close our meetings with prayer and seek God's will and direction with our writing
we want to uphold integrity in all the written words that are brought to our critique sessions

The last point is an important one and deserves to be described in our guidelines. I will be sure that this is addressed in our guidelines.

This evening, we met in room 204 at Christ's Church. It's a larger room and we all felt that it was even more comfortable than our prior room 506.

Since we're on the topic of Word Weavers, I'd like to introduce you to Eva Marie Everson, author, speaker, writer and founder of Word Weavers. She is the one front & center in the blue polo. This Word Weavers officers picture was taken four days ago at the Word Weavers annual writers retreat at Lake Yale, Florida.

Word Weaver members are all very thankful for Eva's dedication to growing such a supportive group for writers in the Orlando area. Eva has offered to come speak to FCCW, so you'll get to meet her in the near future. You probably also recognize Larry Leech, just behind Eva. He came up in support of our first FCCW meeting on January 24, 2007.

Cheri Cowell, in the black & white swirl top to the left of Eva, is the one who told me about Word Weavers when I was at the Glorieta Writers Conference in October, 2007. I'm so glad that I met Cheri and I'm especially thankful that she told me about Word Weavers.

Debra Wilson Explains the Why & How on Press Releases for Writers

This evening we had the opportunity to hear from PR expert, Debra Wilson, on the basics of the writing and distribution of press releases.

Debra provided the group with a basic press release format along with the following helpful tips:

Focus on what the reporter/reader will care about.
Grab their attention with your headline.
If at all possible, answer a "how" question as well as who, what, when, where and why.
The first paragraph is key so make it count.
Use a "banner" paragraph at the end of your release that describes your organization.
Keep it simple.
Never use more than two pages.
Keep in mind that editors receive hundreds of press releases.
Write in third person.
Study press releases that others have written (search online).
Make sure there are no spelling errors. Most releases are printed exactly as you send them.
Use a quote when possible.
Address your release to the appropriate person.
If you send via e-mail to multiple contacts, address them in a blind copy.
Give the reporter a few days before you follow up with them.
Be available to editors and reporters. If they call or e-mail you, respond quickly.
Don't give up!

First Four First Coast Christian Writers Officers

In our first meeting last week, I asked everyone to fill out a brief form with their contact information. I also included a list of all the officers positions and asked everyone to number, in order of priority, their interest in serving in one of the following leadership roles:

Our VP of Education didn't even attend our first meeting, but Debra was so excited about the group that she told her colleague and writing partner, Mary, about the group. So Mary McCormack attended our second meeting and volunteered to serve as an officer--and what a blessing it is to have an NSA member serve in this role!

Inez Holger was my writing partner. We used to meet at Borders coffee shop to read and critique each other's writing. She's a fabulous writer. Her writing keeps you laughing and crying all the way through. She's amazing at writing details about setting and characters. I was so excited when I saw Inez at our first meeting last week and even more excited when she stepped up to serve as our Treasurer.

The blessings go on, no really! Get this--Debra Wilson is a PR specialist and she volunteered to serve as our VP of Membership. Debra already has many of the skills we're going to need to promote the group in the community and reach our goal of 52 members by December 31, 2008.

Over the past few years, my prayers have become less specific. I pray for the big vision and God always answers. He doesn't always give me the answer I want, but in this case he finally is. I have been praying for a local weekly writing support group with people serious about their writing and this initial leadership team gives me hope that this is finally becoming a reality. I also wanted a group where we could open and close in prayer and provide a ministry for and through writers. For the past few years, I couldn't figure out why God wasn't sending me an invitation. I finally realized that he wanted me to send the invitations!

Jim Ovenshire is the first speaker for First Coast Christian Writers. He presented 15 lessons he learned from publishing his own book. One of the tips he mentioned was to remember to put your title on the spine of the book! Hey Jim, would you mind posting all 15 of your tips as a comment to this posting?

First Meeting of First Coast Christian Writers

Eleven people attended our first meeting on January 24, 2008. Larry Leech, President of Word Weavers, joined us in our kick-off meeting. The Orlando Word Weavers gave me the inspiration to start a similar group closer to home. They have a unique critique format that's magical. After visiting their critique group just once, I realized that I needed to create the same opportunity for writers in Jacksonville. Larry told his story of what Word Weavers has done for his writing career and for many others in the Orlando area.

Participants had the opportunity to get to know each other and to hear my vision for the group. Several people expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to give and receive support from fellow writers. This was a big encouragement to me and provided me with even more assurance that this group is meant to be.

Everyone also had the opportunity to provide input into FCCW Guidelines that spell out the format of our meetings and who will be responsible for what. We used our guidelines as a sample of how to do a critique the Word Weavers way. Larry led one group and I led the other.

My vision is for us to grow to 52 active members by December 31, 2008. That means that we need at least one new member each week. Is God calling you to write?
